well my housemates and i have our computers connected to a router and that to a modem. We are all getting internet properly on each of our computers.

We want to set up the network so we can share files over it. I ran the windows network wizard on mine and a housemates computer. I have us both the same workgroup name. When i go to network places on my computer and click on "view workgroup computers", my housemates computer shows up, but when i click on it, it says i don't have permission to access that network resource. I Did go onto his computer and clicked on his C drive to share it. Also, when he clicks onto the same "view workgroup computers" from his computer, he gets teh same error message abut not having permission. I have enabled a "movies" folder on my computer to be shared.

Why do we have no items in our network places? how do we around this "no permission" business.

on another note, our router also has wireless abilities. If we were to add sources wirelessly, with the more connections on wireless, does the speed decreas? how is wireless G compared to ethernet speedwise?

many thanks

Make sure you have simple file sharing enabled on all computers. You can check this through, explorer-> tools-> folder options-> view. I had a problem similar to this on my network, only one comptuer had simple simple sharing disabled, but it made none of the shares show up on any comps.

hmmm i dont' seem to see an option like "simple file sharing". What do you mean by explorer? I'm going to start then choosing explore, then folder options and view. Is that what you meant.?

that is what he means, it is the very last one under Advanced Settings in the box that is the lower part of the view window.

For security reasons I really would not make C drive shareable. Just share the 'shared documents' folder and any printer you may have.

i don't see that option in mine. The last item in my advanced settings window is "show pop up description for folder and desktop items"

Also, if you don't use the network wizard, how do you tell your computers that they are on the same network? because they are plugged into the same router, does that mean they are on the same network, or do you have to give them the same workgroup name?

hmm i guess its obvious that i have no ldea what i'm doing and i need to beef up on my my understanding of networks and stuff. I'll go and look for a detailed guide to setting up a home network with xp home and post back here with more specific questions. Thanks for the help

Almost every second question in the networking forum is on this subject. Please take a look a JackMDS' site ezlan.net, read your router manual and you will have no problems configuring your setup. You do not need a detailed guide. Networking with Windows XP Home is pretty straightforward and simple - the only wrinkle is that TCP/IP protocol works well in a fixed IP setup - whereas most people sharing a internet connection thru a router are using a dynamic IP setup - so adding a second network protocol such as Netbuei makes the local area connections more robust. Its all there at the ezlan.net site.
