Some help with After Effects please

I've just started messing around with After Effects. The rendered video is fine, but the audio is messed up. When I play it, it's just a bunch of cracks and pops. I was thinking maybe because the video I'm editing has a VBR mp3.

isn't after efffects like premier, but with filters and stuff?

I thought work in After Effects was best done with .wav files for sound...

Hmm, maybe I'll convert the mp3 to wav. Kind of a hassle though, there must be an easier way.

For me, if I've done any work in any Video Programs, I've had to convert things and it does take up time... Pain in da butt, but that's how it works...
