Hey guys,

I was hoping you could help me out. I was formatting a friends computer to put win 98 back in because ME was a little...faulty. I wanted to reset the bios, couldn't find the jumper on the mobo, so I wanted to take the Lithium battery out and put it back in. In doing so though...THE COMPUTER TURNED ON RANDOMLY..I panicked so I pulled the plug out. I then put the plug back in, and put the battery back in...and it then it turned on randomly again. It wouldn't turn of so I unplugged it again and put it back in..and now the computer won't turn on at all. In retrospect..I may have been a little hasty in the unplugs, but I wanted to cut power in case of a short circuit or something (what had traumatized me from before). So that's my problem, the computer is 900mhz Compaq so I don't know the exact specs...I just know they're these compaq specific generic parts. Thanks for any help you can give..i just wanna get the computer on again. Its out of warranty so my friend can't send it in.

The Power-On when first plugged in is a "design feature". The system powers on when it is first plugged into the mains and then shuts down into a soft-off Power state in order to comply with ATX requirements.

You REALLY were too hasty pulling the plug. You may have damaged the system with all those pulls. Let the system rest for a while and see if it starts up later.

dont have a solution to your problem, but for future reference: if the power switch refuses to work on any computer, press and hold it for 5 seconds and it will shut off. much safer than unplugging it

awe :( well it only did the turning on and off when i took the battery in and out which i found really wierd. I've put together a couple computers in my life and mobos didn't turn on and off from taking the battery in and out. With my rash unplugging..what might you think I could have damaged?
