some guy just tried to give me money for letting him use the computers in the lab

I'm sitting here, manning the print station, when an older guy approaches me and says that he's here on a business trip, staying at a hotel in town, and needs high-speed internet access, and the hotel told him to come to the college's computer lab. However, he needs a login to use the computers. So I let him use my account for a few minutes, and he did whatever he needed to do, and was extremely grateful. When he was finished, he offered to give me some money as thanks. I politely refused, saying just being able to help was enough. It was sort of odd, but he seemed truly extraordinarily grateful, like it was a matter of life and death.

heh, I made sure I got him to a computer that I could monitor from my desk. He was on a corporate website and email. Looked like he was just emailing various documents. ... Or was he? 😉

hey man, thanks again for letting me use that computer today. I had to set up a few zombie PC's to route my spam through.

We used to get vacationers where I used to work. They'd bring in their laptops and say they had to check their e-mail. We'd pull up a chair next to our unused switch, plug 'em in and let 'em go. They'd always offer to pay, we always declined, but they usually shook their head and smiled and left the money on the counter and left.

Smiled eh?

At a conference I went to at UMich we had to stay in the dorms during the summer for a few days. I went "exploring" and found a computer lab in the basement of their union building. Sadly, they all required logins. I would have payed a few bucks to get internet access for e-mail and time wasting.... well, before I got my wireless Clie.

in other news, UC Berkeley just had ANOTHER security breach, losing the social security numbers, birthdays, and addresses of thousands of students, included doctorate students as far back as 1976. some lady just walked in and took a laptop with the info on it...

might want to think twice before letting strange people on the computer network, buddy.
