Some good news - mutilated Afghan woman getting reconstructive surgery in USA

The young Afghan lady whose husband cut off her nose and earlobes (carrying out the village elders' sentence for running away) is now in the USA. She's undergoing a long series of reconstructive surgeries, staying with immigrants who speak Farsi (her only language), and has been fitted with a prosthetic nose to allow her to appear in public without self-consciousness until her operations can be completed.

She's a babe, too. It's amazing how beautiful a woman can be when you don't beat her, force her to sleep in a stable with the animals, and mutilate her. Thankfully the world has nations like the USA to repair some of the damage done by more barbaric cultures. (Apologies to barbarians everywhere for comparing them to the Taliban Afghanistan - or to the new Afghanistan for that matter.)

I think it's like an ear. To reconstruct an ear they build a framework of artificial cartilage, then grow skin and tissue over it by implanting it under the skin of a genetically engineered mouse. When it's finished, it looks like an ear, so it is removed from the mouse and attached to the human. I've also seen a similar method whereby they actually attach the ear under your own skin, so that the new skin and tissue is your own. That has the significant advantage that immunosuppression drugs are not required while your own tissues replace the mouse tissues, but also the significant disadvantage of not having white mice with ears growing out of their backs which frankly is funny as hell. I could be wrong though, as nose reconstruction is not something I've ever researched. Oddly enough it hasn't come up that often.

Them? It's only the one lady, the others are previous immigrants. Personally I'm glad we got her out of that hell hole and are helping her rebuild her life. We can't save them all, but we can always save some.

He married her at twelve, beat her, and forced her to sleep in the stable. He sees her as property, so he can do any horrific thing he wishes to her and just get another 12 year old wife to replace her. I'm more horrified that the village elders would see this as a proper punishment for running away - or for that matter, for anything. Every place is going to have a few people greatly in need of killing - but a whole village run by them? (Not to mention stupid - cutting off someone's nose and ears is horrific, but you'd hardly expect they would be left for dead afterward.)

I'm as anti-Sharia as anyone, but this is pushing it far beyond any reasonable interpretation.
