Something broke in your first apt-get dist-upgrade, then. Maybe a source was temporarily unavailable and it bombed out or something. But at the start of this thread you were certainly not runnng unstable, as evidenced by the XFree version. And if you have GNOME 1.4 now, then you're still stuck somewhere in the middle - unstable GNOME is 2.2/2.4.

dpkg --clear-avail
apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
