Some General CPU questions

So, i've built a few rigs, and i know that diffrent steppings can and most likley produce better o/c's

now take for example this quote

$240....Intel Core2Quad Q6600 G0 SLACR 728A729 (Retail box / lapped)

(Retail box / lapped)

Now, the

G0 is the stepping.

What is the SLACR and the 728A729 Mean?

also, what does it mean when the cpu is "Lapped?"

*excise me for being to naive, no flaming please 😱"

The SLACR is the 'G0' chip; they are one in the same. This is the preferred version of the CPU by some folks. It runs cooler and supposedly overclcocks better/easier.

"LAPPED" means that he sanded the heat sink area of the CPU to make it perfectly flat. This makes it fit against the Heat Sink better, to get rid of more heat. Problem is, that it also sands off the numbers and identification of the chip so the only way you're going to know if that's what you're buying is to plug it into a machine and put it to work.

ah ok,

I just noticed, i just orderd all the parts you have inn your sig

Q6600 Quad
Abit P35 Pro board.
Corsair PC6400 RAM

What Hsf are you using? what timings for your memory are you using?

also, did you find the "Ez clear cmos" switch useful or just a gimmick>

is your quad a G0 or B3? whats the highest o/c you got it to?

*excuse all my questions, im just very excited to see what my new rig will pan out to 😛*

GOOD MOVES, ALL of 'em!

OEM Intel HSF with original Intel goop. (See my other thread from today for temps)

Came in handy during the build, that's all. Never touched it again.

It's a G0 purchased through Amazon They guarantee to sell you the right chip (G0). I stopped the OC process at 3.2 but I'm sure I could go higher. RAM timings are now at 4-4-4-12 but you need to make sure to set the RAM voltage to 2.1 on the original bootup. That board defaults to 1.8 but the memory says right on it, 2.1V

Don't worry about the questions! Better to be informed all the way before the build.

I've been overclocking since the old days of Intel's beginning Pentium 2 days. Back then the hot setup was the slot-1 Celeron that was rated for 300MHz but clocked with just a single tweak, to 450.

WOW!! 450MHz!!!
Wow that was a lifetime ago.

thanks SDPC, Im fairly confident now that with an arctic cooling freezer pro, i should be reasonable at hitting ~3.4-3.6.

Now just gotta wait for Mr.UpsMan!

An Arctic Freezer pro 7? Quad-Cores produce a LOT of heat, even the G0 steppings. I think the Freezer would be good for 3.0-3.2GHz. A better cooler would be needed for a higher OC.
