Some General Advice about the XP2500M Please?

Hey,

I was gonna buy a XP3200+ but I've heard good things about the XP2500 Mobile. I need some advice though since I've only ever overclocked graphics cards before. First thing is how do you go about it? Is it in the BIOS or is there a program you need to use? Second thing is I'm not sure about my motherboard - its an ASUS A7N8X-X which is the budget range and I'm not sure how it is for overclocking.... Lastly, I use a CNPS6000 AlCu silent cooler which is copper and aluminium fan shaped with a 92mm fan that only spins at 1500rpm in Silent Mode (which is the mode I run it in) - I emailed the people who I bought it from's tech department (quietpc.com) and they said that it would support an XP3200 without trouble in silent mode, however I am still awaiting a reply as to an overclocked XP2500, what do you reckon? I thought it would be ok since the core voltage is lower or the same as an XP3200 isnt it?

ive only used one a7n8x-x, but i think you should be able to get the same overclocks out of it as an a7n8x deluxe.. its the same chipset, same board, just without all the extra features..

if you have a 2500+ now, dont bother with the 3200.. its basically the same cpu, just certified to run at 200fsb/2.2ghz.. you can overclock most 2500+'s to that easily, and probably a bit beyond that..

if youre asking about the voltage of the mobile 2500, its only 1.45v, instead of the 1.65v of the normal xps.. aside from that, i hear its the same as the desktop ones.. so theres more room for overclocking..

as for your heatsink, itll probably do just fine.. as long as the temp stays below 70c or so youre fine..

Ok thanks a lot. I'll probably just buy a mobile XP2500 and a Gig of DDR400 and take my chances.

Ok cool. One more thing, I'll obviously be needing some DDR400...I've heard the A7N8X-X is pretty picky about memory. I'm using crucial DDR333 at the moment and it works fine. I was thinking of getting some better (than crucial) DDR400 like Corsair but it costs a packet. I've seen some memory by 'Geil' which looks like it's pretty good, and its about £50 less than the equivalent amount and speed of Corsair. Anyone verify this and do you reckon my mobo will take it? Or is crucial DDR400 decent? To be honest their DDR333 has impressed me so do you think I should just stick with them?

go to asus' site and look at the memory compatibility table.. buy something thats specificially listed there.

kind of a pissoff, but that site lists kingston valueram cl2.5 .. same part number as what i have, cept mine is cl3 and the one they list is cl2.5..

lo and behold it doesnt work with my a7n8x deluxe at ddr400 .. constant bluescreens.. its fine at ddr333 though

i had the ram tested where i bought it, it works fine at ddr400 in a couple other asus boards (a p4 board and an xp board with a via chipset).. so they wont refund me.. BAH!

at least if you get the exact part listed on their chart, if it doesnt work and the ram checks out, you could theorhetically make asus do something about it, like buy you some ddr400 memory that DOES work with it, or something.. good luck, but you have a better chance with something listed as compatible..

If you're wanting good quality, fast ram that doesn't cost as much as Corsair XMS or Kingston HyperX (both of which work wonderfully with your board, btw), I recommend you get OCZ, unless you want to run that Geil at 180 fsb, just like everyone else who has bought it for an Asus A7N8X. Geil is fine for P4 boards and non-nForce2 Athlon boards, but horrible for almost every nForce2 board.

edit: Oh, and you bought the cheaper A7N8X, so it will make it to 200fsb if you get the right ram, but it just won't hardly make it past 200, unlike the Deluxe.

Haha, that's what you say now! Yes, any XMS or HyperX is good ram. Although, if you are 100% sure that you will never want to try above 200fsb, save some money and get the PC3200 Kingston Value Ram (which also won't hardly go above 200) which is guaranteed to work with your board.
