i wonder how gamestop determined that they were receiving stolen goods. but if they think there's a good chance of unintentionally acting as a pawn shop, and they are within their legal ability to do so, then i guess they can.

now, whether that is a prudent business decision (i don't think it is) is something else entirely.

not all customers, just the ones selling used games.

I guess it makes sense in a pawn shop kinda way.

They probably had a ton of incidents where someone sold them a stolen used game. They have to turn those into police, and since they've already paid the customer, they are out 100%.

Quick gamespot anecdote. Sister was shopping, calls and says shes right next to a gamespot, do you need anything.

I tell her to grab me mlb the show (i specifically told her to get a *new* copy) and i'll give her the cash when I see her.

She hands me the stupid little bag and I reach in.

:sneaky:

Not only was it unsealed, but it had the used sticker right on the corner. They charged her the standard new game price.

First world problems.

We had a similar situation in my city. A local ordinance required pawn shops to fingerprint customers who pawn items.

The Game Stop, comic book store, used record store, and an independent game trading place successfully got them to change the ordinance to exclude businesses that only deal in a specific class of items.

I am going to go with "that didn't happen" response. As having worked at Gamestop for a bit in college, this doesn't happen. Unless someone put the wrong price tag on the used game, this wouldn't happen.

are you kidding? you are comparing food stamps to people buying video games?

Why should you have to give finger prints for either?

As for GS, it's pretty simple...don't do business with them. Lose enough customers and it will stop.

Gamestop now fingerprinting costumers
Why the hell would Gamestop fingerprint a costumer? In fact, why would you being going into a Gamestop in costume anyway? What, you want to buy Halo 5 dressed as Master Chief? That's just weird...

not saying it's good or bad to either. In fact i think fingerprinting for foodstamps is a waste of money.

But you really cant compare the two. one is being given to people by tax money. the other is a company that enjoys ripping people off.

Gamestop. I realize it's a story on Gamespot reporting on Gamestop, but the two really aren't the same. :p

In some areas this has been going on for years. Certain locales regulate GameStop as a pawn shop due to offering cash for games.

You got me. I fabricated the whole thing just to stick it to the "man". Sigh.

It happened, dude.

Did a quick google search just to see if my story was an outlier, NOPE. It seems as though they are notorious for selling used, open games as new. Rofl. Looking through various forums, it appears gamestop employees "borrow" the games - when they're done, they sell them as new. Stay classy, gamestop.

There are non sealed copies that can be checked out by employees, yes. However, it isn't allowed for new releases. However, you can request (and receive) a sealed copy if you wish. The term used gets thrown around a lot, with ambiguous meaning. Are new cars that have been test driven used? And guess what? People who work at dealerships can also drive home the cars. Are those cars then used? Ever bought a diamond? No diamond can be classified as used, so paying for a 'new' one doesn't mean it came from the mines.

You didn't get a previously owned copy (one that Gamestop took as a trade-in) for the new retail price. Didn't happen.

:awe:

Shut it you imbecile. I like how you made no mention of the policy in your first comment, btw.

At the very minimum, a game taken out of cellofane = used, handled, no longer holds it's value as new.

Jeebus you sound pathetic.
