Some food for thought.

What a tremendous TeAm we've got going now in DPAD!

Here's something to "chew on" -
US-Distributed is the unchallenged leader charging up the ranks with only 24 members. (presently in 5th place)

TeAm DPAD is trouncing all others except US-Distributed - and we'll be in second place behind US-Distributed before long. (and yes... this includes the DPC!) We have 41 members though it appears 10 have dropped out. :(

This begs the question in my mind... "Why settle for second?" US-Distributed isn't out-producing us by THAT much, and isn't THAT far ahead.

Granted - US-Distributed has a couple of "heavy hitters" - but SO DO WE!
Just a few rambling thoughts by someone who'd like to see AnandTech in 1st place. :)

I'll be on either DPAD or F@H after SETI ends. Need to read more about each one.

There is plenty of time to make us #1 on DPAD. We need NOW to make us #5 in SETI.

Oh, and Run Forrest, Run!! ;)

Sorry guys, I'm one of the ones who dropped DPAD to move on to other interests (the machine I had on it got transferred to F@H when TA F@H needed the help really bad). :(

Right now, I've got to keep my two "secondary" machines on F@H, since my main (much faster than either of the others) system is doing SETI until the end of SETI 1. However, eventually, I plan to put one of my slower systems back on DPAD, since the ability to cache and manually send WUs as necessary would be best in that particular remote situation. :)

well....technically it never has to cache or send anything ;)

it can just do a mega mega ultra-big dump once :p

Welcome back jliechty!

Btw..do you have DSL yet?

So would you concider it Dial-up Friendly? If so I will probably join up after seti for some payback for those who have been helping us out. Who knows, I might stay.

By the looks of it after Seti ends DPAD will have an immense growth in power.

Just downloaded DPAD and I'm hooked already!

However I will continue my service to the seti team until we wrap it up.

Titan...well let me say..*welcome*

OUr team is quite a tight knit bunch. Death did the stats for about a week but has since disappeared :(, so i stpeed in to do stats, i got busy so amdxborg stpped in and so on..what a team! :)

Also to answer your questions...

The way the client works is that it runs a simulation of the best muon transfer that a theoretical particle accelerator can get (the client designs essentially a particle accelarator with the goal being to generate the highest amount of muons possible). Once a run is finished the data is written to results.txt. & results.dat. Results.txt disappears once you upload your results (can do this as soon as you hit a 10KB file..does it auto at 100KB..or u can do it manually whenever) but Results.dat remains on your pC with every experiemental design constructed. The client then learns from its prior design over time and improves upon the work...

I'll have a full DPAd writeup tomorrow guys :)

If you wanted to waste your time, stress their servers and get no "extra" credit then you can.

Yes, it is very dialup friendly. IIRC, you just click on the manual transmit program whenever you happen to be connected. The interval between transmissions can be a day, a week, or several (but from the last time I did it, it was best to update the results file every now and then with "Best transfers" so you wouldn't want to wait too long - does this still hold true?).

And, I'm sorry to get hopes up, but I'll not be able to start crunching DPAD until SETI 1 ends so I can get my main rig back on F@H. If you are religious, pray for S@H 1 to end quickly (but not until we re-pass BBR). ;) :D

jliechty - good news. The client automatically grabs the best transfers upon upload of results!

Just set it to "1" in the config.txt file on setup. No muss - no fuss. Things have gotten ALOT better since the older days. ;)

Of course - it's all ASCII text - so dialup isn't an issue. SCORE! ;)

You say it will auto send at 100KB, how does this work? What if it reaches 100KB when it is not connected to the internet? Will it send once it detects an intenet connection?

If so I could probably get this on some of my family members computers as long as they do not have to mess with it at all (very computer illeterate).

Edit: there are 3 different clients, graphical, hidden and command line. Do they all work on their own data? I noticed that If I run the graphical up to 30ns and then run the hidden, when I go back to graphical it has not advanced. So what happens?

A. It will auto-send at whatever threshold you choose, so long as there is a pipe to send it through, be it dial-up or otherwise.

What if it reaches 100KB when it is not connected to the internet?
A. The client will continue to save results, and continue to try to reach a server.

Will it send once it detects an intenet connection?
A. Yep. ;)

A. My wife... (former AOL user) runs DPAD. 'nuff said? ;) It can also be installed as a service for no muss, no fuss. (3rd party solution)

here are 3 different clients, graphical, hidden and command line. Do they all work on their own data? I noticed that If I run the graphical up to 30ns and then run the hidden, when I go back to graphical it has not advanced. So what happens?
A. No. They all read and write from, and to the same results files. You cannot run two at once - this will corrupt the files. If you have multiple processors, you can specify 2 (or more) threads in your config.txt file.

Does that help any? ;)

doesn't sound like a good plan to me :p

I've been thinking about DPAD too after SETI1 is over... could switch couple of my boxes over.

Currently running (almost) 24/7

2x XP2200+
1x Dual MP1800+
1x Dual Xeon 450
1x P3 1Ghz
1x P3M 1,13Ghz (lappy)
1x P2 400 (lappy)

soon
1x Dual P2 300
1x Celeron 1Ghz

part time crunchers:

-2x XP1900+
-1x XP1800+
-1x P3 450
-1x P3 550

I also have 3 IBM desktops that were just replaced. These are only Celeron 333s, but I think they could hit 450Mhz.
Just sold (unfortunately) P4 2,53Ghz and Athlon 1400 cause I needed the money :(
