I think I did this right, but just want to be sure.
Basically I want to run my own DNS server, so I setup the zones and what not and make domains point to a certain IP.
Now I want to make it so ns1.mydomain.com is the DNS server. I have such entry in my DNS server. So locally I can nslookup it and I get the DNS server's IP.
So in my domain registrar's interface (itsyourdomain) I went to name server management then put ns1.mydomain.com as well as the IP and submitted it.
That went in successfully.
Now, say someone who has a domain name with another registrar, and they enter that ns1 and I setup their domain at my end, will it work? or will it only work if they are using my registrar? I'm not sure exactly how these get "registered".
Also how do reverse DNS zones work exactly, like where does it get registered? It seems thats assigned by the data center, do I leave it that way, or will I have to take it over when my DNS server is the primary for that domain? I know when running a mail server I'll need to make the mail server name lookup and reverse lookup match.
How does this work with multiple domains on same host? Do I need to still give the same SMTP server to all customers rather then mail.theirdomain.com?
