I am getting a 9800 Pro for the third time now, but I plan to keep it for a while this time. I have some frag tape on the way so that I can mount my ramsinks on the BGA chips to keep them cool while overclocking. This I am comfortable doing.

Now cooling the GPU is where my question lies. I was looking to buy a VGA Silencer for it but how necessary is it really? Would I be better served using the stock cooler and just replacing the stock thermal compound with AS Ceramique? And how "dangerous" is it to remove and reaffix the stock cooler?

removing the stock cooler ain't too difficult... except for getting the push pins out... now that's a real pain in the butt...

the thermal goop they have on the gpu cooler usually makes the stock cooler stick to the core.

you can easily unstick this by just rocking the cooler back and forth... this is safe because the push pins have springs on them so rocking it is no problem...

i am about to remove mine so that i can affix my mcw50-t on it...
 
Since they are so cheap i would recommend the vga scilencer. It really does lower the temperature (use one myself) and 9800 pros run really hot so i would recoomend a better hsf

It's the one i used - very thorough.

There is a sub section on flashing the 128MB version to the XT - of course, no Overdrive or thermal overclocking. 😉

that link was posted by accident and corrected to the Radeon Cooler mod guide (within a couple of minutes - due to SLOW dial-up).

The second article will TELL you if you have a modable card . . . probably as most of the newer ones are r360.

I've just ordered an Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer v3 for my 9800 Pro. I hope I can make a 9800XT out of it. 🙂


Oh hey, can I intall BGA ramsinks on the RAM chips on the top of the card under the VGA Silencer?
 
I got the 9800 Pro today. According to the info in the Rojak Pot article, the memory on my card is not the right memory but the heatsink is fastened using the new clips...

I guess when I get the VGA Silencer I'll pull the stock cooler and get a look at the core itself and know for sure. I hope it is an R360 core...
 
Well, it turns out that the core on this card is an R350 so no 9800XT flashing will occur with this card. But the cooler is now installed and even on the high speed setting it is way more quiet than the stock cooler. I'm really happy with it. I hope it'll allow me to overclock a good bit.
 
Well, I've had the card for 4 days now, one day I couldn't use it as my neighborhood lost power in a freakish thunderstorm. Our juice was off for 26 hours. 🙁

Some comments about this card. I really like it. I don't know why it took me 3 times (yes, this is my third 9800 Pro) but I think I'm going to stick with it for a while. Since I got the VGA Silencer on it my system is quieter than it has been in a long while. My case temps are lower by 3C. My games look fantastic, especially Painkiller. And 2D quality is outstanding.

I'm using Cat 4.7, there are no glitches in any of the games I play. I play UT2K4, Painkiller, Halo, Freelancer, and Star Wars: KOTOR. I can play at 1152x864 with good AA and AF settings and the ingame settings either very high or maxed out (except Halo, what rotten code).

What a great card for only $165 shipped. 😀
 
The Silencer is a great product. It's really quiet (I run it on low), much more so than the stock HS/F. What is the key benefit is it directly removes the GPU heat from the case, which no other setup will do. Put your hand back there and feel how hot that air is. I'd rather not have all that heat just dumped back into my case.
