My wife has been complaining that her laptop (Dell Inspiron 1100, Windows XP Home) has been terribly slow lately. I've been fooling around with it today and it dawned on me that I am seeing certain things normal and certain things slow.
In Windows Explorer if I right click on a file to get the context menu, it's OK. If I right click on a folder however, it takes 20 to 30 seconds of the hour-glass before the menu comes.
If I delete files they delete right away. If I delete LOTS of files it gets right down to work and deletes them all. If there is even one folder in the selected set of objects for deleting, however, it takes a long time.
If I right click in an open space, as to create a New Folder, it takes long.
The File and Edit menus take long to drop down. View, Favorites, Tools, Help are OK.
I told her next time she is using it, look for things that take long and see if there are things that can be separated out as consistently slow or fast.
Any ideas?
