I fell for this back in '92. I had just moved into my dorm my freshman year, and this girl came by as people were moving in - before classes started. What a better group of gullible people than kids who just graduated from high school, and haven't had any life lessons yet? She gave me the same story about how she gets a vacation if she sells magazines. Then, as I'm saying no, she decides to mention that I can cancel my order in a few days, but she still gets the points. I still say no, then she says I get 2 subscriptions for the price of one. (Funny how she didn't mention it all in the beginning.)

So my stupid 17-year-old self writes her out a check for $30. She gives me a card for the place I should call to cancel the subscription. She had me make the check out to her (hello....McFly!!!) Sure enough, when I call the number on the card, it's out of service. But I'm smart (so I thought), I'll call information and get the number for the girl herself. I had a record of her name in my check registry. Of course, that name wasn't listed.

I chalked it up as my first lesson in life, and have made it a mission to do everything I can against rip off artists. To this day, I even get upset when a legit company doesn't meet my expectations when I'm paying for something. I write letters to companies all the time. I cannot emphasize enough how FURIOUS I get when people want to rip others off. :|

You should've told her a BJ would have bought 3 magazines.

She's in college, she should know.... she's gotta give some to receive some.

That's how your mom met your dad.

You're funny.
Confusing your parents for my parents I see.

Hahaha, "I know you are but what am I" works well for you, doesn't it? :D:D:D

*edit*

The contests and points are actually real. Anything beyond that is almost always a lie. The companies that sell the subscriptions are real companies, but from what I understand, the odds of actually getting your entire subscription aren't so good. The ones based in Florida are usually the worst for that.
This is what these people are actually doing for a living. They usually have a quota of seven subscriptions per day. If you really want to mess with them, ask them for their license. They won't be able to provide it, and if you call the cops, odds are they'll end up in trouble and have to make a court appearance.
I did this for a while back in 1996.

Thank God you're out of it, because I hate anyone associated with it. GOD I cannot express enough how much I hate people who stoop so low to bother people for a living. All telemarketers should go to hell. Door-to-door salesmen too. Get a fsckin' degree and do something worthwhile with your life. (Not directed at you, just the industry in general)

One time this very attractive but probably very slutty girl showed up trying to sell me magazines. She proceeded to enter my condo and actually stayed for about half an hour. She basically told me she would have sex with me if I bought some magazines. I have to admit, she looked good but in the end I didn't buy any magazines.

I had a guy come to the door trying to run this scheme, except he was seriously playing up the fact that he was mildly handicapped. He had a pretty bad lisp and spoke extremely slow, if I was to guess I would say he had FAS.

His whole speech had to have been made up for him by his mom, he started with "People don't like me because I talk slow, they shut the door on me. Are you gonna shut the door on me?" Then he started in on the vacation bit, asking meaningless question after question. "Do you like jamacia? My mom says that if I am nice and polite, people will listen, do you think I'm nice?" "I am going door to door to give me practice talking to people and getting a vacation to boot, sounds fun huh?" After about 3 minutes worth of questions he showed me a list with what i think were all kinds of magazine names and saying "You know what this is?" I looked at it and it had been drawn all over with pen, pencil, crayons & markers, stuff like stars, palm trees, seagulls, suns, all I could say was "uhhhhhhhhh?? What are you doing here?" He replies "I am learing how to interact with people, remember? Are you slow too?" Then he turned it over, more stuff scribbled all over except it was all of the magazine names highlighted, circled & tripple underlined with stuff like "Pick three!!" "Please Please" "Be nice" written all over it. "These ones are worth double points for my vacation, I'll get there twice as quick!" he says. It was close enough that I could make out the names of some magazines that I recognized this time instead of being distracted by his happytard artwork. I cut him off and said "You're selling magazines then, ahhh. Thanks anyways I'm not interested in any subscriptions." He gets a blank look on his face and after about 5 seconds of silence says "have a nice day......" while continuing to look at me. He kept on staring at me until I shut the door, never changing his facial expression.

I had one like that approach me at a mall a while back....except she started getting all touchy and was following me the entire mall for about an hour hanigng all over me (who am i to complain...she was doable). Finally sat down on a bench and she sat on my lap and she was like "how many can i put ya down for?" I thought for that effort I might as well put up the $20...i gave her cash cause i knew it had to be fake (selling mags for kids)...no regrets actually cause it was alright to be wanding around a mall with a decently attractive girl hanging on ya...escorts usually cost more anyways ;)

I wouldn't have heard the rest because he would have been on the other side of the door.
