Some anonymous person uploaded a file to my FTP

i had anonymous login and write access for personal and friends use. just recently i logged into the ftp server and found out someone uploaded a game called call.of.cthulhu.dark.corners.of.the.earth-reloaded. none of the people i know uploaded that file.

are there online scanners who probe people's ftp port and borrows their server for space?

edit: this all makes sense now. the other day my internet connection was at crawling speeds. i thought it was just my ISP havine issues. now i'm sure that someone was downloading the uploaded files off of my server.

edit 2: i turned on anonymous access and only allowed write access to see what kind of files i'd get. later i looked at my ftp server log and see that someone is trying to hack into the administrator account, but there is no such account. it looks like it's done through a program and not manually. here's the log:

Yes, absolutely.

Having an open FTP server is just ASKING to have all kinds of wonderful stuff distributed from your connection.

Be happy it's warez and not kiddie porn or something.

Either way, shut that remote access down. Are you and your friends all too stupid to use a simple login name & password?

Heh, someone uploaded a game that won't be released for five more days.

I'd actually kinda like to play it.

Wow, OP, that's a really, really bad idea. Get yourself an SFTP server (e.g. Filezilla?). Anonymous FTP like that hasn't been "safe" for probably 15 years.

Happens all the time, programs are out there that will scan as big of an ip range as you want for anonymous port 21 no password access. The good ips get posted and warez galore show up quickly

I know a guy that made a "write only" open FTP server (anyone could UL stuff, but you had to have a personal account to DL stuff) just to see what people would send. He got all kinds of things like german pornos uploaded by people that thought they could DL it later.
