hello, i plan to buy a new comp very soon, it's gonna be something of a value gaming system and i dont know much about comps. i've checked severals reviews already and i'd like to know what u think of my settings,

CPU : AMD Duron 700Mhz
MotherBoard : Gigabyte GA-7ZM
Memory : 128 SDRAM PC-133
Hard Drive : Maxtor Diamond Max 40 Plus 15.3 GB
CD-ROM : Creative 52x
Monitor : Samsung 750s 17"
Video Card : I heard about the GeForce2 MX which sounds good.
Sound Card : Sound Blaster Live! OEM
Case : something with 300W
Ethernet Card : DLINK PCI 10/100 Base T

all that costs (assuming that the GeForce2 MX costs 180$CAN) 1800,9$ CAN (about 1200$US..i think..)

one question, does Asus K7V motherboard work with Duron processors?

 
u need to buy a MSI socketA mb for durons. i thnk its a good gaming rig but will be better if u just went w/ a hercules or any kind of other ddr and get 20gig hd intead for only about $10-20 more that is a 7200rpm for best performence. other than that it looks good to me🙂
 
get rid of the Creative 52X cdrom's ..if I remember right the 48X was noisy as hell and not even reliable.
Get a Toshiba/Panasonic/Aopen/Teac they are better cdrom's.

Also get teh 7200 RPM 20GB drive and screw the Geforce2MX.. get spend a little more and get something a tinny bit faster, maybe a GTS. The MX aint bad for specs, but I havent seen anyone who has got one here.
 
With only making a few changes to the system, the changes I would make:

Motherboard: Asus A7V. Asus is releasing two versions, one with multiplier dip switches and one without. Get that one with if you plan on overclocking.

CD-ROM: Personally, these days I would go with a DVD drive. My recommendation is a Pioneer. 16x/40x if it is in your price range, 10x/40x if it isn't. If you really need that extra CD-ROM speed for some reason get a Kenwood True 72x. For most newer games, CD-ROM speed past 32x makes little difference. It obviously does affect install times though. <Edit>No matter what, ditch Creative as far as CD-ROM drives. They are crap.</Edit>

Case: I would recommend the Antec SX830 if you need a recommendation.

Ethernet Card: I personally like the Netgear FA310TX, same price range as the DLINK. From a better brand (Bay Networks), and has better alternative OS support.

These are just my opinions.
