I guess this would really suck if you were able to prove your innocence later...

I have my doubts whether their 'confessions' were obtained without some form of coercion.

Yes, because all the criminals in prison are innocent.

"ad-hoc" court. That just kind of screams for abuse right there. Obviously, there will be no appeal. Hopefully they're really guilty, and not falsely accused. One has to wonder why they confessed.

OTOH, if they are guilty, I have no sympathy for them.

Enhanced interrogation techniques FTW(L)!

I'd hate to see what they have to do to convince someone that losing a limb is preferable.

This is crap. Can't believe people support this and then turn around and laugh at saudi arabia for doing the same thing.

This is horrible.

Indeed. There is no justice under Sharia law. It goes against all commonly-held beliefs about human rights and decency. It has been perpetuated through Islamofascism and now many Muslims have completely backwards beliefs on what constitutes justice, dignity, etc. I saw a YouTube video yesterday where a Muslim cleric talked about how women being kept inside and covered from head to toe was the only way they could maintain their decency, and how women in Western societies are much worse off because they "show their face like a harlot."

That shit needed to die 500+ years ago.

Confese or die.

While I don't give a shit about criminals, I do draw the line at amputating someones body parts for a crime. This is just a system installed that allows for the people in power to practice barbaric acts of violence and for some sick fucker to get his jollies off chopping someone apart.
I've seen video of the hand amputation before and don't be fooled in thinking they do it with ansthetitcs (sp?) I've seen them do it with a scalpel and they tie the victim down hold his arm out straight and slice through the skin, muscle and flesh and then pop the hand off at the wrist joint. Other times they just tie the hand/arm down and chop it off with an ax or sword.

If they amputate the leg anywhere above the knee, the person will most likely die within 48 hours.

Frankly I'm somewhat surprised. All the cry baby libs here think water boarding and parading enemy combatants (who happen to subscribe to Shiara Law) around in cloth bags and making them pile up on eachother was akin to microwaving babies, but none seem to be spouting off how bad it is when they mutilate people for stealing something.
I guess Bush isn't in charge over there so it's OK.

Yes, because that's exactly what he was saying. No one in prison has ever been proven innocent and been exonerated of the charges they were imprisoned for.

But if they do happen to be innocent, is it worse they give up a few years of their life or some limbs that will never grow back?

I fully agree with public torture if it's deserved. Stealing a few things, no, but a huge BNE totally trashing multiple houses, putting people's lives in danger, yes. Think stricter punishments would send a message accross.

Problem is, the RIAA would be all over this. People would get executed for downloading MP3s.

that's pretty rough, but maybe it will springboard their pirate careers
Parrot, eyepatch, and peg-leg not included. Some restrictions may apply. Offer void in Utah.

A pirate is sitting in a bar when the customer on the next stool asks, "Hey, I notice you have a pegleg, a hook and an eye patch. How about sharing the stories about how they happened? Must be some amazing experiences you've been in."

"Well, one time we had boarded a ship off the coast of Cuba, and while we were carrying the spoils over to our own ship, one of them shot at me and hit me in the leg and it had to be amputated."

"What happened with your hand?"

"That was pretty wild. On a trip into port in Bermuda, we started fighting with a rival pirate crew and the swords were going pretty good. We killed five of them and lost two of my own crew. But near the end of the fight I misjudged a thrust and the guy I was fighting lopped my hand right off."

"Man, that's something. And the eye patch?"

"That day I was on lookout duty in the crow's next in the Caribbean, and I happened to look up just as a seagull took a dump and it hit me in the eye."

"Really? Seagull crap made you blind?"

"No, it was my first day with the hook."

"The defendants admitted the charges brought against them and were sentenced accordingly. Each one of them will have his right hand and left leg amputated publicly," Sheikh Abdallah said.

in this case id say cool, not overboard at all...

in this case...

In October, a 13-year-old girl was stoned to death in public by around 50 men on one of Kismayo's main squares. She was accused of adultery by local hardline Islamists after reporting that she had been raped by three men

id say they were fuckin religious nutjobs and going a bit far in their interpretation of sharia

You can't say one is cool and the other is f'ed up just because it's convenient for you.

I'm all for amputation here, and executions for death row inmates should be carried out daily. In large groups. To save on time/materials.

haha, "convenient".

While you can argue that the punishments are too severe, there is NO argument that one of these cases is wrong and one is right. A girl who is raped should not be punished in any culture, there is nothing "right" about that.

Agreed. Sure, these pirates deserve some sort of punishment (vs. the 13-year-old girl who didn't deserve any punishment), but amputation is totally ridiculous and uncalled for.

It is hard to have sympathy for criminals but you can at least try to see things from their perspective.
