parliamentary speaker Sheikh Aden Mohamed Nur asked for foreign intervention within 24 hours to help prop up the government.

Oh yeah, because that worked so well the last time.

Its transitional government controls only parts of Mogadishu, but little of the rest of the country.

Somalia should just be split up IMO. It flat out doesn't exist as a country.

It's not really funny, just sad. Insanely impoverished country with a moderate islamist ruler trying to hold off extremist influences. Hope it doesn't devolve into another fundamentalist cesspool.

If you think it's already as bad as it could be, you need to calibrate more than your sarcasm meter. Fundamentalist Islam has a strong hold in the country there but at least to this point hasn't locked up the government. As the article mentions, Sharia law wasn't instituted there until only recently, and it was to try to appease the fundamentalists.

I have to agree with Mani, right now Somalia sound like one of those sex education commercials aimed at parents, if we don't do it Al-Quida will.

Just what we need, more countries that become Al-Quida playgrounds, allowing Al-Quida to spread terror far and wide. Greed, terrorists, and poor fishing have all resulted in the collapse of the Somolian economy, helping them now will pay dividends in the coming days.

Wait, what? Where have they been the past decade or so?

I do agree that Somalia should be split up. Heck, there is already a more functional government set up for part of it that calls itself Somaliland, but other nations are not keen on formally recognizing it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somaliland
