solvent for thermal compound?

Is any household stuff ok to use? Alcohol, fingernail polish remover, paint thinner, just a clean dry cloth?

just use isopropyl alcohol and some qtips, or lint free cloths. alcohol wipes work good too.

as long as it wont leave any residue (alcohol for sure wont) on the heatsink it doesn't really matter

99% rubbing alcohol seems to be the favorite around here

91% ipa is easier to get than 99%, and either one should be fine. some folks complain that it leaves a residue but it's not a big deal (I don't think).

Rubbing alcohol. You can go as low as 70%, but it'll take longer to evaporate. 91% is relatively easy to find (I got mine at CVS for about a buck).
