*Solved*What's a good HDD cooler for a DM9+?

OK, now my system is very quiet (annoyingly enough my 25dB Fortron FSP350-60NP is the most audible thing in my system.) Anyway, now since there is minimal airflow since my 1.5Lbs heatsink does a good job my HDD is running somewhat toasty. SpeedFan reports it (via SMART) at running at around 40c! Forgot to mention that it's an ATA Maxtor DiamondMax 9+ 80GB and if memory serves those temps are a bit high for ATA drives. So I am in the market for a good HDD cooler that will hopefully kill some of the whine on the drive. Cooling is top priority however as the whine isn't too bad.

Thank you! 🙂

I'd wager that speedfan is wrong. I seriously doubt your HDD is 40C. Put your hand on the drive....what's it feel like?

Comfortably warm, could be used as a hand warmer. 🙂 I ran another utility called DTemp and it reported 40c also. However this might be caused by the fact that the drive is running through an Abit Serillel2 PATA-to-SATA adapter?

My DM+9 is cool to the touch, however I do have a Panaflo 80mm L1a 21dB fan in the HDD cage. 😉 What kind of case do you have?

It's mounted in a 3.5" bay in a Chieftec Dragon case with no fan over it. It's towards the middle bay that normally houses the floppy to allow better upwards airflow. The case has about 22cfm of airflow.

I'd try mounting it in a 5.25" bay with brackets if possible, but mine was fine in my old case (not sure about my brand-spankin new Sonata 😀).

Sonatas are cool. 🙂 Too bad my Chieftec Dragon case is pretty good already...

As for the HDD I think I might try opening up one of the floppy bezels and see if the cool air helps a bit.

I have the same case. You should have (2) 3.5" cages, and the bottom one holds an 80mm fan. Move your HDD's to that cage and you now have a free HDD cooler. 🙂

I just read over your OP completely, and 40C is fine. Mine is anywhere between 30C and 40C (I'm in a ~60F basement), so I wouldn't worry.
I would have gotten one of the Chieftec\Antec towers, but this Sonata came calling, and I had $75 in BB Reward Zone cash that was burning a hole in my pocket.

The drive will be rendered obsolete by the time a temp of 40C damages it. Heat is bad for computers and their components if it is constant and excessive. A temp of 40C is not excessive, and is well within the limits of the drive. Linky-doodle.

Maxtor has had a reputation for producing some very hot running drives, and I am pleased to say that this drive isn't overly hot. After the computer was on all day, being subjected to gaming, mass file transfers, and constant use, it was warm to the touch. HMonitor reported the temperature at 39*C, while my 40 GB 7200 RPM Seagate Barracuda IV was at 40*C. The case temperature is at 32*C and the ambient temperature is at 30*C. Throughout all testing, the drive was extremely quiet.

I stand corrected. 😉

40C is NOT hot..
hell it's often close to 40C in my room in the summer here in Southern California!
My case temps get up to 50C many times
60C = hot

Your room is close to 100F in the summer? Do you live in a cardboard box? You should invest in an a/c. 🙂

Thanks for the help people! I had a fan blowing over it before which had it's temps at about 29c instead of 40c! Good to know that it's still within a safe range. However if the summer heat is too much I might need to invest in a Panaflo L1a with a 5v Mod to cool it down a bit.
