(solved vdeck.exe conflict) winamp slows vista 64 *terribly* but foobar/etc do not

i figured out vdeck.exe (part of the onboard audio a program related to it) was causing this problem! My audio still works without vdeck.exe running. I might just switch to a PCI sound card again.

--------
am running this new box i built recently, athlon ii x4 quad core, 4gb memory, ati readon hd 5770, mobo= ASUS M4A79XTD EVO AM3 790X, using onboard audio

it has been working great thus far, runs crysis and gta4 great.

however I am clueless at how winamp can slow my system to a crawl and near being useless.

it is easy to reproduce this.

basically, all i have to do is switch to the next song in my winamp playlist, so pressing B (fast) to go to the next song up ahead 10 tracks will always reproduce this problem thus far.

but doing the same thing in other media players does not slow my system to a crawl.

defining how slow it gets, basically everything (except the audio) has a lagged response and is slowed down **extremely**, this includes typing and window responsiveness, seemingly almost everything except the audio sounds just fine.

i tried the following to try and fix this (but none of this helped unless otherwise said)
> removing all winamp plugins except in_mp3 and out_ds
> setting winamp process priority to below normal.
> disabling defense+ on comodo firewall (& rebooting)

after i process kill winamp, the system remains in a slow (but somewhat faster) state for 20-30 seconds and after that it seems to return to its normal fast speed.

this is really .. really weird and annoying.

Maybe it is the operating system. You might try running it in compatability mode. Some older program ran better in compatability mode like 16 bit games.

ok just tried that, did not help.

hmmm
one day i think i'll test win7 64 and just for fun another install of vista64

Are the OS and the media files on the same hard drive? If so then that is likely why you are seeing a slowdown. It's trying to load those files while doing other things and it gets behind. Your hard drive is the slowest primary component (except the Internet) in your system.

@jdjbuffalo
just now tested using my mp3 files that are on a seperate internal 250gb SATA drive

same problem. did not notice any differences in how bad the slowness was, or anything else.

OS drive is a 500gb western digital SATA drive.

Haven't run across that before. Just a wild guess... C1E / CnQ stuff tends to cause weird issues with some multimedia programs. I had issues with VLC, but not winamp. To test, set the power settings to High Performance (before launching) and see if it still does the same thing?

i have some new interesting news!

i did a suspend process on winamp.. no help. (using process explorer)
i then also suspended vdeck.exe (part of the VIA onboard audio system)

and guess what? instantly my system returned to normal.

so... I think I'll switch to a PCI sound card and see how things roll with that.

@dman:
disabling cool n quiet did not help

dump winamp... it was nice in its early day but has since become bloated

try AIMP2.. you'll be pleasantly surprised

Before getting a new sound card, what about updating your audio drivers?

@jdj yeah, I'll try that (as long as there is a newer version out).

to be honest I've been considering to switch back to my previously used soundblaster xfi PCI card, but have not done it yet 😛

from VIA's website downloaded v7300a for my 1708s via audio chipset

replaced vdeck with a slightly newer version, same problem with it and winamp.

luckily vdeck does not seem critical and my audio still works without it running. (no winamp problem without vdeck running!)
