[SOLVED] using router (WGR614v5) as a dumb switch

I disabled DHCP client and server on the router, and then everything freezes.
The computer also has DHCP off, just programmiing whatever info the PC used to have before adding router into the net

I noticed the router still wants to have an IP address even when I disable DHCP client, I don't know what to put in there

Any suggestions on what to do (well, other than buying a separate hub)

Btw, all of this is for wired access only, I disabled the wireless (well, as much as could)

Edit: all fixed, thx AT

If you'r eonly using one computer why are you putting in the router anyway? And if you want to use mutliple computers then you put the Static IP into the router, turn DHCP on and the internal computers on your network get 192.168.x.x addresses which is standard. TO the outside world you are still the static IP but the router takes care of sending any data to your computers.

Unless I'm missing what you are trying to accomplish.

uhm, i feel dumber than usual all of a sudden... i thought the upstream stuff has to go into WAN, or use a crossover, no?

I have two more computers and a network printer, each with a static IP that I wanted to plug in behind the switch, I just don't want to wait a week for the local network guys to activate all the jacks in the room. Plus i figured this will give me flexibility in the future.

anyway, trying to plug the upstream cable from the wall into the LAN section on the netgear now...

I need to change DNS server from the default one that comes down from DHCP. I have a win2k3 server that sits on the same network as the clients, and the clients need to use the 2k3 server for DNS. I can't use my server for DHCP because the network guys throw a fit when anyone does that.

Anyway, i plugged the cable from the wall into the LAN section of the router and : SUCK-CESS! all werks now! thanks guys for all the help

btw, if my network setup looks completely herrendous to you, please advise on what else I can do... (edit: advi-Z-e, not advice)
