*Solved - Thanks!* Disconnecting a computer from a router...

I am disconnecting my computer from a Linksys Cable/DSL router with four port switch because we got rid of our second computer.

The problem I am running into is that when I plug the ethernet cable directly into the computer from the cable modem, I can't bring up the Internet.

I tried to run a new network connection for Internet and it said it should be functioning. Any ideas?

Have you tried power-cycling the modem after you hook the computer up to it? Many cable modems are set to learn only one MAC address that they'll talk to. If you switch from the router to the computer without resetting the modem, the cable modem will still only respond to the router.

Honestly, I think you're better off leaving the Linksys in place, as the NAT functionality will have some firewalling action.

I feel the same.

I actually think that every one who have Broadband Internet connection should use a Cable/DSL Router even if it is connected to single computer.

Thanks for the replies! It was the resetting, as mentioned (I wanted to test it and make sure - you know, a learning experience! )

However, in light of the advice to leave the router connected and a bit a research, I am going to keep the router on. It's not like it's going to cost me a arm and a leg for the electricity.
