Ran into this problem about a month ago where while SETI was running it would essentially 'LOCK' my computer and anything but most noticably IE would stop responding for 3-10 seconds. I have tried various things to try and correct it. First I thought it was my PS cause it's voltages were jumping around alot until it died but I replaced it with a 550w PS and the thing is stable as a rock, so no luck. I've triend unistalling/reinstalling/reinitializing seti (using setidriver latest release) with setispy to check stats. I've tried running the CLI by itself without setidriver but to no avail. I'm running 2k pro spk3 and didn't notice any change until i upgraded to spk3. I have tried tweaking my services but nothing seems to help. I also have a 2nd machine with 2k pro spk3 on which works fine.

Does this problem ever happen to anyone else? I did try one thing that seemed to work, I set both IE and seti cli to 'normal' thread priority and it no longer hangs IE, however it greatly degrades performance. I also have my 2 machines behind a firewall on a router but it just doesn't seem like anythings wrong. I'm asking before I go ahead and reinstall my OS to get rid of this damned bug.

SP3 can do wierd things to a computer. And it may do one thing to one and not to another. I have systems at work that I was putting sp3 on and on some it would hose McAfee and others it would leave it alone. i would say that you could try to uninstall sp3 first, but all the ones at work that got hosed, I was unable to fix without an OS reload!

That problem is why I have never stuck with SETI. Since they started, I have on + off tried them multiple times and had problems with SETI not giving up priority. I have not been disappointed with folding@home though.

Definitely strange, I as well have Win2k Service Pack 3 with no problems.

You don't have a virus or something do you? Spyware?

I've got plenty of systems at work with Win2K SP3 and the only problem I've seen with them running SETI is the Outlook2K pause.

seems the problem was in the OS, after a clean reinstall everything works great again, weird...

SOLVED!!!!!

Apparantly the OS had nothing to do with it because again I was having the problem on 2 of my comps, seems it's due to Zone Alarm's Vsmon.exe that runs in the background. After a while (day+) of running SETI straight with this app running, it slowly kills your internet connect, and seems to be a problem ZA is aware of but doesn't know how to fix. Weird!

Thats even stranger because I use ZA & I've never had that problem ,I run SETI 24/7

Are you sure its ZA? (gotta link about the problem?)
Which version do you run?

<=== Hates Zone Alarm. It's nice when it works properly but in my experience I've had far more problems with ZA than I've had with trojans or hackers that ZA is designed to keep out.

Glad to hear you've got your problems worked out. :)
