Hi, the on-board Wi-fi no longer works on my Asus z170 deluxe.

Computer switched off by itself, no mention of error or blue screen code.
Switched back on, no wifi, Device manages says device could not be initialised
Switch off and on again didn't work.
Uninstall Wifi driver locked up PC
Disabled wifi in bios, then uninstall driver worked.
Re-enable Wifi in bios, windows locks at boot, no disk activity, caps lock key doesn't light up when pressed.
restart doesn't help things.
Can only boot into windows with Wifi disabled in bios.

Can anyone suggest a way to troubleshoot this?

Have fixed it, Took the battery out and unplugged it for 20 mins, working fine now.

How do I change the title of the thread to solved?

Good you got it solved.

However this is the reason why I refuse to buy Asus and others that implement their cheap Wifi solutions in a fixed mode you cant replace. All Wifi should be standard M.2/mPCIe based for easy user replacement/upgrade.

Man, I wish you could buy graphics cards with socketed GPUs and RAM...

This particular implementation is far better than your average cheap solution but yeah would be nice if it was removable. TBH I've had so many issues with USB Wi-Fi dongles, they rarely stay working for very long, keep having to switch USB ports, and even then I'd be lucky it worked at all.

U get what u pay for. I bought the most expensive Asus usb adapter (AC56) for my desktop and it's rock solid. Never drops the signal either. I've only had it for a month, but so far it's best usb adapter I've had and it's faster than the wifi in my Asus Zenbook laptop. There's a saying: "I'm a poor man so I only buy expensive things".;)

From what I can see specwise our implementations are similar. Maybe mine could do with a heatsink.
