OK, I think I am down to the last part for my new build, that started as a CPU, only, upgrade.
Yea, Right, Like that was ever going to happen LOL!

You guys convinced me to just bite the bullet and do it right, and there are really good prices to be had compared to my last build. Also, my current PC will be left completely in tact, hopefully to be sold, but that is an issue for another day, and the for sale forum.

I am now down to the SSD, and have gone through a lot of info here, and elsware, as well as looking for parts that I could afford, and comparing to the reviews in the review thread.

Thanks for putting that together. It is a treasure trove of information.

My two current choices are as follows:

Crucial M500 120GB SATA - 120 gb ($80 Shipped)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820148693

SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE120BW - 120 gb ($90 Shipped)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...9SIA29P1EC5421

I would also welcome other recommendations, as well as info on best possible pricing on good solid 240 gb versions as well

To keep costs down, they use the same density flash (IE, capacity per die, and often per chip), just less of it, so there's less bandwidth and parallelism to exploit.

I have a Samsung 840 (not EVO or PRO, just plain old 840) and a Crucial M500 in my system. So far not a single problem and it seems really fast!

Thanks for the tip on the Mushkin 240 GB. I will check it out, as I that is a really good price, if it is a good drive.

I checked on Newegg, and it seems like a lot of failures with this one. And recent too.

I found this 240 GB SSD at NewEgg that looks very interesting.

PNY XLR8 SSD9SC240GMDA-RB 2.5" 240GB SATA ($149 Shipped)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820178456

I read the review front the SSD Reviews Thread here a AnandTech.
It is from Benchmark Reviews, and the link is below:

http://archive.benchmarkreviews.com...sk=view&id=970&Itemid=60&limit=1&limitstart=0

They gave it very high marks for both Bandwidthk, and Speed performance.
That still doesn't speak to longevity, but with a 3 year waranty, expandible to 5 years via resgistration, it seems like a very good bet.

Reviews at NewEgg:
9 of 9 - 5 Eggs (most from February and March this year, one from November of 2013.

Reviews at Amazon (14 Total - Back to February of 2013):
9 - 5 Stars
2 - 4 Stars
1 - 3 Stars (Nor recognized in several PC's, but later recognized in his Laptop)
1 - 2 stars (Stripped out mounting screws)
1 - 1 star (Failure after 4 months on a day when temps got to at or above 90 Deg F)

I am really tempted to try this one, as it is a 240 gb drive for $149, but I really do not want to risk a failure if I can hilp it.

Comments?

M500... In fact, I'll be fetching one next week for my next build. Yes, I'm choosing it over the Samsung.

All things being equal, I'd get an Intel 530, but their prices aren't competitive right now against the M500/Evo battle.

Just checked Amazon: M500's priced as follows (all free shipping with Prime):

120 - $75
240 - $120
480 - $227

I am now almost ready to pull the triggar on the M500 - 240 GB

Just for info sake, Amazon also has the Samsung EVO 250 GB for $140.

480GB for $227? Wow, nice. That's only $50 more than I paid for my Samsung EVO 840 250GB last August.

Prices have really been dropping since last summer. SSDs getting to be really affordable now.

Crucial is making way for the update... the M550, so the M500's are a bargain right now, while still being an excellent drive. I originally was going to get the 120, but I'll probably just get another 250GB and be done with it.

Yah.
Just too good of a deal to pass up.

I believe that there is one in by very near future as well.

I like the EVO's myself, for my first SSD's I bought a couple 120's about 6 months ago and RAID 0'd em at 99 bucks a pop.

But they are all getting down in price to not even worry about that on capacity these days.

Please don't compare manufacturer's specifications because they often lie. In real-world testing and benchmarking, PCI-E SSDs by and large (with a very few exceptions, all of which are "enterprise" SSDs costing an arm and a leg) the SATA III SSDs are just as fast as the PCI-E SSDs. This is because the PCI-E SSDs do not use native PCI-E interface to the controllers for the NAND flash, instead they are based around modified SAS/SATA PCI-E controller cards with custom firmware and they're essentially doing SATA RAID on the device. 2xSATA III SSDs in RAID0 will be as fast or faster than any of the current crop of consumer PCI-E SSDs and will be SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper.

The reality is we're all waiting to see what comes down the pipeline. I'm hoping that SATA Express will take off and we'll see PCI-E native SSD interfaces available sometime in 2015, but I'm not holding my breath.
