Solved, n/m: Biometric (fingerprint) authentication software

I'm working on a few HP Compaq 6515b business laptops with built-in Authentec fingerprint readers. I actually upgraded them from single-core Sempron 1.8GHz to Turion 64 X2 2.0GHz (TL-60), added 1GB RAM, new/larger hard drives, PCMCIA smart card reader for military CAC...real easy laptops to work on, but that is besides the point.

I wiped the drives and did a clean install of everything but I don't want to (actually cannot) use the OEM provided security manager software to use the fingerprint reader for Windows login/authentication.

Are there any other applications that can enable this, for cheap or free? I installed Vista Home Premium but I could wipe it and install Vista Business if that includes some support for biometric security functionality that Home Premium does not.

Used the latest version of HP Protect Tools (OEM) security software. I tried a few OEM alternatives such as Digital Persona (from HP) and True Suite (from Lenovo) but none of them supported the fingerprint reader.

I initially couldn't get ActivClient for CAC installed because HP Protect Tools Suite has its own bundled version of ActivClient but does not provide an uninstaller just for ActivClient. I figured out that if you install ActivClient for CAC first, HP Protect Tools will use the existing version rather than its own bundled version.

If HP Protect Tools is installed first, then uninstalled, it also does not uninstall the bundled/OEM version of ActivClient even if you select 'remove all components'. But I finally figured out that ActivClient can be uninstalled separately by locating the ActivClient source installation MSI in the SWSetup folder, right-clicking on it and selecting "uninstall".

I came here in frustration looking for an easier straight-forward solution but managed to get it straightened out. Took me two days of f-cking with it.
