The PS/2 ports on my motherboard are dead, and I'm trying to use a USB keyboard and mouse in Win98SE.

BIOS is enabled to run USB in DOS, but I lose both wwhen Windows loads. I was able to get around the mouse detection dialogue box, but now getting stuck when it asks for the network sign-in, and the USB drivers haven't fully loaded.

Suggestions?

I had this problem a few weeks back with Windows XP. The USB keyboard was working fine in DOS but soon as it hit the XP login screen it stopped working. I had to plug in the USB keyboard AND a PS/2 keyboard at the same time and use the PS/2 keyboard to login. Once logged in XP detected the USB keyboard and I was away.

I guess you cannot do this because your PS/2 ports are not working. I think your only solution is to format, that way the Win98 setup routine will detect the keyboard whilst detecting hardware.

Good look.

Can't you just cancel the network login (with the mouse) and allow the drivers to load??

Read the first line of his original post...

The PS/2 ports on my motherboard are dead, and I'm trying to use a USB keyboard and mouse in Win98SE.

Both his PS/2 ports are broke - he is using a USB keyboard AND Mouse, otherwise I would of just suggested that.

Must remember not to type before that third cup of coffee.

Anyway, a friend and I were working on his pc with win98se and we managed to kill the 2 PS2 ports. In our case, win98se recognized either the keyboard or the mouse (possibly the keyboard) and we were able to get past the login screen. We did not have to re-install windows.

If the keyboard is recognized, you could obviously use the TAB and ENTER keys to exit out of network settings, shut down windows and restart.

I found an old POS serial touch pad, and used it to get past the login screen. Windows then loaded a bunch of HID drivers for both the keyboard and mouse, which seem to bridge the network login transition - not exactly sure how or why, but I am back in business.

Glad you got it going!

Richard98 : Sorry if my response to your post was a little sharp, it wasn't intended to be that way! :)

No offense taken. Good to hear that the poster got it working.
