I have a Windows 98 SE that's gone terribly bad, therefore, I wish to do a fresh install. - Please don't ask why.

I had already created back-ups of the needed files onto a CD-R. I have a Win 98 SE CD-ROM, however, I misplaced the certificate/booklet that came with the Win 98 CD-ROM.

I've gone to the Registry of the Windows 98 computer and retrieved both Product ID and Product Key.

My concern is... does the Win 98 CD-ROM holds the same Product Key code with the Win 98 system?

Therefore, I'm asking if there is some kind of a cracker or whatever hacking program that allow me to find the Product Key in the Win 98 CD-ROM. What is the name of the file, where can I download it. Free is good.

** Thanks in Advance **

Correct me if I am wrong...but I thought the CD does not have any actual key information, one is the lock (the program on CD) and the other is the key (the activation code).

I'm quite certain that the Cd does not have any key information on it. If you have a valid prodcut key, you can use any 98 disc you want, they are not tied to each other.

Seems like Product Key doesn't need to have the same code as with the CD-ROM. But yeah, I did tried to install Belarc and came out with an error message which I posted a thread here.

Till now, I can't even boot up the system - kept getting "Invalid system disk. Replace the disk, press any key to continue." I'm still pondering... "What disk? I had not even put a floppy in ages in that system!". So I popped a Win98 Boot Disk... same problem.

So I guess... the next I gotta do is find out the step by step of doing a fresh install. If the Product Key that I jot down doesn't work... well that's another story.
