I've got a problem with my desktop freezing. The computer starts up fine, but then it will just freeze and become non responsive. I can still move the mouse around but I can't select anything and whatever program I already have running will stop working as well. I have started it up in safemode and it works fine. Could it be a virus? (I do have symantec antivirus and spybot installed and they are all clean. Plus I don't open or run things when I don't know what they are)

I'm running Windows XP MCE. This is a system I built myself about a month ago. This same problem happened about 2 weeks ago and I ended up just reinstalling windows, but I don't want to do that again if there is something that can be done to fix it.

At first I thought that the problem might have been the PSU overheating (the tower was about 1/4" away from the back of a desk so there was no airflow) but now I have the tower sitting in the middle of the floor and the problem is still happening.
I don't think it is the CPU overheating either because in BIOS it says the temps are at like 30C and that is what my laptop runs at so I don't see a problem there.

Anyone have any suggestions about what the problem could be and/or how to fix it?

Thanks

check your RAM with memtest86. Also, I think that you might have a virus, like you said, or a driver issue because the computer works fine in safe mode. Try running a virus and adware scan with the latest definition in safe mode. I have seen cases where the same antivirus software will not detect viruses in normal mode, but detects them in safe mode. Try removing all your peripherals to see if the problem stops.

thanks for the reply. I ran memtest and nothing came up, i also ran anti virus and spyware software in safemode and they came up clean. I replaced the drivers and fiddled with msconfig a bit and got it all to work (i think it had to do with drivers)

I am having the same problem. I built my comp about 2 yrs ago now and it has never given me any problems like this until last night. The computer boots fine then within about 1 minute it becomes unresponsive. It will boot in safe mode. I will have to run my virus scan and adware stuff in safe and see if anything turns up.

twitchy ten...what drivers were your problem? I haven't updated any drivers recently so I'm not sure how that could be my issue but I'm curious.
