<Solved for now> Access Denied to Docs & Settings folder

I have a HP ze1000 laptop with XP Home that boots to BSOD. I put the HD in my PC to backup files before reinstalling. I can see the drive fine but get "Access Denied" when trying to open/copy "c:\Documents and Settings\Owner" which includes My Docs, My Fav, Desktop, etc. I went to Restore Console from the XP CD but was not able to get xcopy or xxcopy to function properly to copy the files. This seems to be a security issue with XP. Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Ok this is what I found from Google. However I do not get a "Security" tab on right click. I am logged in as computer admin on XP Pro. Any ideas?

To set, view, change, or remove file and folder permissions

1. Open Windows Explorer, and then locate the file or folder for which you want to set permissions
2. Right-click the file or folder, click Properties, and then click the Security tab.
Do one of the following:
4. To set permissions for a group or user that does not appear in the Group or user names box, click Add. Type the name of the group or user you want to set permissions for and then click OK.
5. To change or remove permissions from an existing group or user, click the name of the group or user.
Do one of the following:
6. To allow or deny a permission, in the Permissions for User or Group box, select the Allow or Deny check box.
7. To remove the group or user from the Group or user names box, click Remove.

Well after working on this all afternoon with no luck I put the drive back in the laptop and it booted fine. Backed up files and reinstalled. Sigh... gotta love windows huh.

Like I said, you simply had to take ownership of the folder. You obviously have simple file sharing enabled, uncheck it in folder view options, and you'll be able to change permissions when you try again 🙂
