SOLVED!!!!CPU HSF/Fans Spin then die! What is the problem?

SOLVED-Thanks especially to mechbgon and Kenazo-HSF was backwards.

Hey guys, I've searched general hardware and tech support, but nothing. Today I was applying new thermal paste to the CPU (Athlon 2600) and cleaned off the old stuff with rubbing alcohol. Put the new stuff one and snappeed the HSF on. My friend was trying to put the fan back into the mobo, but I think he put the small molex for the fan into the jumpers for the RAM. What happens is:

Fans (with lights) spin, CPU HSF spins, then shuts off after about 5 seconds. The light for the mobo and the lights on the IO stay on.

What could be the problem?? Hes got a 9800pro, 2 HD's, 1 optical drive. Mobo is an Asus, not sure of the model though. Generic sh!tty PSU that worked fine till we opened it up. Please help me, since its my friend's computer.

Thanks.

first, thanks for the help mechbgon-you deserve the elite membership!

second, I felt the heatsink click into place. could it still be wrong? also could the thermal paste be a factor? it seemed thin and even.

Thanks once again.

the mobo doesn't have an ATX 12V 4 pin connector. Also, the cpu fan spins, the case fans spin, then 5 seconds later, it shuts off, HOWEVER the mobo lights stay on.

what was the old CPU

is this 2600 a barton 333 FSB

are you sure the board can support it

do you need to update your BIOS to support it

do you have the jumper set to 166FSB if it is a 333 chip

no it was running at 333FSB. The jumper may be in the incorrect position though-i'll check that one. However, this computer has been working for a year already though. I applied new thermal paste since the old stuff (pad) was decimated.

if the CPU Heatsink was installed backwards, could this be causing the problem? I did heard a click, and it is firmly in place though, could it still be backwards?

Thanks

The CPU heatsink should look like this not this. (Thanks to mechBgon for the pics) If it's on backwards, take it off and pray it works when you put it on the right way.
You could also try unplugging everything except the bare essentials (video, CPU, RAM) and go from there.

i have my generic 420, but that gave my system problems (A64 2800/6800 OC) so I don't think its a good idea. Yeah the psu seemed to be a sh!t one (i think the brand was nokia!), but whyw ould it stop working now if it was working fine before?

might have blown something inside of it? The same thing had happened to one of my machines, hence why I think that's the problem. I'd say try the 420w one and just see if you can get it to boot, if so, then you've isolated your problem.

not a bad idea. Do you think if I installed the HSF backwards, it wouldn't work? Thanks for all your help Kenazo.

Your mobo must have some pretty good thermal overload protection. 🙂 I fried an AthlonXP 1600 back when they were expensive with a heatsink that wasn't seated quite right. 🙁 You're lucky.

ouch! i applied some thermal paste myself before we installed it backwards, also the cpu hasf was spinning, but nevertheless thanks for all your help!
