I have an old system with windows ME on it....what i'd like to do, is make a copy of it onto my new system i have with winXP. i dont want to dual boot it, i just want to copy it over incase there are any documents i may need from it in the future.

now when i connect the winME drive as a slave, the bios never recognizes that it's connected...even if i set it up manually or on cable select.

any ideas on how i can access the winME drive so that i can copy everything easily? if it comes down to it, i'll just take it to my house and connect it to an external case and hope for the best.

thanks for any other ideas

EDIT: the bios never saw the drive, no matter how i set the jumpers...but, if i put the drive back into the old system, it booted just fine. I have now placed the drive into an external case, and am trying to access it as a usb mass storage device, but once i connect the usb cable, and xp says "USB MASS STORAGE DEVICE" detected, nothing ever appears on mine or my roommates computers....

and amdskip, that system didn't have a burner on it, and i was hoping not to have to install one for it, but that may be the way to go in the end

EDIT: i'm powering this one via a plug into the wall

EDIT: also, its appearring in the device manager, but says "This device cannot start. (Code 10)"

EDIT: SOLVED: when setting up the external drive's jumpers, i used this site MAXTOR JUMPER SETTINGS because it is a maxtor drive of course...so i set it up as the master drive like it said to do on a sticker inside the enclosure...well, long story short, i swapped it to what that site claims is the CABLE SELECT and it worked....yay me for wasting 3hrs on this :) /shakes fist at Maxtor "DAMN YOUUUUUUUU!"

If you cannot get the system to recognize the drive would it be possible to boot and burn a couple cds?

Does your primary drive need to have a jumper set to accomidate a slave drive? Does the bios see the drive?

An external 3.5-in HDD will be sensed but not appear as a lettered drive unless it is separately powered. There is not enough voltage in USB to drive one. All good external drive cases come with their own power source.

try uninstalling all usb devices using device manager. you'll have to go through them one at a time, using a ps/2 keyboard +mouse. then shutdown/restart, windows will reinstall all usb devices when it restarts, sometimes that can fix a code 10 error. plug the external in after the other usb devices are detected.

SOLVED:

also, humanure...i had tried your suggestion too, and it didn't work.

Thx everybody!!!
