I just tried installing Civilization IV (game of the year boxed edition) on Windows 7 (RC) and at the very beginning of the process, it says "Setup has determined that you need to install DirectX".

I pressed cancel, and it cancels setup. I also tried to cancel out of just the DirectX part of the setup and it cancels the whole setup of CivIV as well.

I ran dxdiag and I am told that I have DirectX 11. I did research and it seems that DirectX 11 is backwards compatible with the DirectX 9 API.

Is it safe to continue the installation or is there something else that needs to be done?

Well, I went ahead and installed it.

The DirectX installation looks for components to update. Of course it didn't find any and finished without doing anything. Then I proceeded to install the game and it works fine.

ever since release of vista with dx 10 there has been numerous instances of a game requiring or checking at install/load for a certain dx file that isn't there as not all file names made the transition from 9 to 10.
