If not what's the best AM2+ processor can it handle? Currently upgrading most of my PC besides mobo. Believe it or not this thing ran pretty good on all games just with an Radeon 4870 512mb plus 8gbram Crysis, Battlefield 2, etc. Also I've found bios from 8-21-2008 so far. Can the processor work without the bios? Gateway didn't even have it listed under the PC had to dig around and eventually found the bios they used for it.

Here's links
PC: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16883113088
Mobo: http://www.ascendtech.us/itemdesc.asp?ic=MB64GATDX420009

Current Specs:
Phenom X4 9100e 1.8ghz
Nvidia GTX560ti 1gb(new)
8gb Crucial DDR2
2TB WD 7200rpm 64mb cache (new)
PSU:650watts

In a quick search i could not find a bios update newer than the one you listed 8-21-08.

So a phenom II might work and it might not. Its also only a 95w board so do not try and use a 125w chip as you may burn out the motherboard.

Your best case is it will support the 95w version of the Phenom II X6 1055

Otherwise you will have the settle for a Phenom I X4 9850 95w version, your board says it supports phenom I's so this CPU should just drop right in with no issues.

Thank you finally a complete answer.

well according to that site that has the board, that one was put into multiple systems, is a faxconn and does have a bios for the gt5694 that was released on 07/29/2010.

http://support.gateway.com/us/en/product/default.aspx?tab=1&modelId=2980

you can try it, an AM2+ system should able to handle an AM3 chip.

just be careful as most of the pII x6 are 125w except for the low end, which are 95w. I'm not sure if that board will handle a 125w chip.

here's a 95w OEM (no heatsink):

BTW, when did you buy this system? it may already have the latest bios.

or you may decide just to replace the board with one that has an AM3+ socket or even go SB. It is a MATX board and anything in that form factor should work.

Can someone please help me understand how to flash these bios provided here?
http://support.gateway.com/us/en/product/default.aspx?tab=1&modelId=2980

They are the correct ones btw. I dont see the 9539740.exe for it to self extract in correct directory.

Here's the read me

1. After you have downloaded and double-clicked the BIOS update file (9539740.exe), the files self-extract and copy into the C:\Cabs\9539740 directory on the hard drive.

2. From the Start menu, click Run.

3. In the Run dialog box, type: C:\Cabs\9539740\. Click OK.

4. In the C:\Cabs\9539740\ window, right click on AFUWIN.EXE and select Run as Administrator.

5. If prompted with the User Account Control dialog box, click Allow.

6. In the C:\Cabs\9539740\AFUWIN.EXE dialog box, click OK.

7. In the AFUWIN dialog box, click Open.

8. In the Open dialog box, select 7B3P071G.ROM in the C:\Cabs\9539740\ folder and then click Open.

9. In the AFUWIN dialog box, verify Main BIOS Image, Boot Block, Restart After Programming, and Destroy CMOS Checksum are selected and then click Flash.

10. The BIOS is updated. Please wait for the process to complete.

11. When the update finishes verifying and it states Stage Done, click Exit.

12. Reboot the computer.

13. On the first boot after the BIOS update has completed, it is possible to receive a Checksum error message. This is caused by some BIOS parameters not being set at the default values. Enter the BIOS Setup Utility, reset BIOS options to optimal defaults (press F9), and then save and exit (press F10) the BIOS Setup Utility.

I would use windows explorer (My Computer), navigate to the directory where file was extracted, do the right-click on AFUWIN.EXE and select run as admin, and then follow the steps from there.

seems they made it more complicated then necessary.

I found a post toms hardware where a guy said upgraded to a phenom II 95w with no problems and without a bios update. So I'm going to update back to the 08/2008 bios and buy a new processor. I've been pushing this gateway to the max lol. Still very fast at playing all games at 1080p especially after upgrading to GTX560ti, Rage included.

Thank you guys so much. I'm sticking with this website seem like a lot mature users who want to help.

Maybe I can help some newb one day :)
