Title says it all...

Here's the error message:

Could not initialize installation. System DLLs corrupt or missing. A dynamic link library (DLL) initialization routine failed.

Got the Belarc Advisor from their Web Site

Does anybody know what DLL is required, and which folder to put? - C:\WINDOWS\System <<----- ????

Any free alternative to Belarc Advisor?

*Computer running Windows 98 SE; No internet connection, but file sharing is doable.

** Thanks in Advance **

Hmmm... we use it at our office, all machines on 98se. I've never had a problem.

Does it say which dll file is missing?

Usually when windows act stupid and can't what's already there, I have to point it to C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System

nope, it doesn't say which file is missing. I even emailed Belarc and sent me a reply... they said it's an unusual question. They gave me a link to follow... - I don't know how to copy files using DOS.

RESOLUTION

Extract the corresponding file in place of the one listed in the error message you received. In the instructions that follow, replace <name> with the name of the appropriate file. This file will be one of the following files:

Commctrl.dll for Comctl32.dll
Commdlg.dll for Comdlg32.dll
Shell.dll for shell32.dll
Lzexpand.dll for Lz32.dll
Ver.dll for Version.dll
Mmsystem.dll for Winmm.dll

Restart your computer to a command prompt, and then copy the <name> file from the Windows\Sysbckup folder to the Windows\System folder. This replaces the existing file with the Windows version of the file.

Another forum guy suggested that I install Aida32, an alternative to Belarc, well... so far my Win 98 won't even boot up. I kept getting the message "Invalid System Disk. Replace the disk, press any key to continue." I kept thinking... "What disk?" I popped a Win98 Boot Disk... yet... no luck.

Anyway... Problem can be solve now... All I gotta do is find a step-by-step process on how to do a fresh install on Windows 98.

Check the website of your HD manufacturer for reformating/partitioning of HD (e.g., Maxtor has Maxblast and Powermax). They are much easier for me than fdisk.

Once you've wiped the HD, I would think your install would go easy. Just pop in the floppy and go on to install off the cd.

EDIT: with a clean install, I think Belarc should go smooth

can't install aida? just unzip it and run the EXE. Unless you mean, you can't start the EXE.
