AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ (Manchester)
DFI NF4-DAGF
eVGA e-GeForce 6800 GS PCI-e
Western Digital Caviar SE 250GB SATA II
4X 512 Crucial DDR PC3200

This is a clean build. The intended OS is Gentoo but the drive is unformatted for now.

The standby power LED lights when the PSU is energized. The DRAM power LED lights when the front panel power button is pushed. The CPU, chipset and case fans come up with front panel power on. The drive spins up at this time but one does not hear the heads seeking.

The is no initial beep (or any other beeps) from the system speaker. I've checked and rechecked the front panel connections and tried reversing the polarity of the speaker connector (a couple of times). The front panel power-on LED lights. Front panel reset does not appear to have any effect.

The monitor never shows it's receiving a signal.

I also tried setting the jumper for CMOS reset and cycling the power. The jumper is back in default position now.

Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Welcome to the Forums :)

You didn't mention what brand & model of power supply you're using. That could be relevant, so give us that info. Other than that, let me start by asking whether the ATX12V cable is hooked up, and the six-pin PCI-Express power cable to the corner of the video card too.

It was the ATX12V cable. I'd completely overlooked it.

For completeness, the PSU is the 400W unit built into an ANTEC SLK3800B case.

Thanks very much for your help. The machine is up and running now, beeps and all. It compiled the Gentoo X ebuild (including downloading source) in 35 minutes, a tad faster than my Pentium III (Katmai) does it :D
