*Solved* Acer 8930G Laptop *hardware or software issue?*

Hello all,

I have a nice laptop called Acer 8930G

Core 2 Duo 2.26GHz
4GB DDR3
2 x 120GB Black Scorpio hard drive
Nvidia 9700M GT 512MB

I did a fresh install of Windows Vista 32 bit with all the latest drivers. No Acer crapware installed. I haven't been on the Internet yet so no viruses/spyware.

Eventually the browser (IE 7) became sluggishness (within hours after a fresh install). I expect IE to open/close smooth like Windows animation.

I even tried Google Chrome, Opera and etc. All have the same result. Strangely, open/close 'My Computer', 'My Document' etc are very smooth.

Why is that? Hardware fault?

What do you mean sluggish? Be a little more specific

You know when you open/close a window like 'My Computer' it opens up very smoothly because of the Windows animation (smooth transition).

When I open up a browser like IE 7, it doesn't open up or close smoothly and it bugs me because my 3 years old laptop doesn't have that problem.

Sluggish, I mean it opens up in a rough way, not smooth.

Do you mean "Animate Windows when maximizing or minimizing"?

Right click on your desktop, go to personalize, display settings and check your refresh rate has been set to match your screen. If that doesn't work try uninstalling your video card drivers then installing newest driver off of nvidia website.

Why IE7? Try IE8 it should work with Vista

1. Yes. Windows animation when minimizing/maximizing.

2. You cannot change the refresh rate since we are talking about flat screen, which is set to 60 Hertz.

3. Yes. I have tried IE 8 too.

It is because the laptop flat screen size is 18"?

Thank you for your suggestions, but I have found the solution.

This might be very useful information for you if you ever come across another customer who might have the same problem.

The problem I was having is when minimizing/maximizing a web browser (doesn't matter which browser it is), it caused it to stutter and the vertical scroll when scroll up/down a page was very chopping/stuttering.

The problem came from the Nvidia video card, which mine is a 9700M GT and Nvidia is using a throttling program called Powermizer. Now, the Powermizer set the video clock speed to the minimum level until you are doing more intense 2D/3D graphics, it will kick-in and the clock speed reached the maximum performance.

As soon as I opened up a browser, the video clock speed reached it max (to deal with the 2D effect), but it wasn't quick enough. It is too late by then.

To solve that, I used a program called Powermizer Switch to turn off the throttling function only under AC mode and on when in battery mode. You don't have to have it running in the background. Just set it and reboot.

No more 2D/3D stuttering or sluggishness.
