Solved: A new pain in the neck computer problem..

Edit: Thanks for the replies. Yes, the problem was actually Windows. I restored my Win2k installation with Norton Ghost and everything seems fine :::crosses fingers::: My guess is that Windows got screwed up when the power supply started failing. I ruled out this option because I found it strange that the Win2k installation prog should hang (possibly indicating hardware problem), but, whatever, things look fine now.

Well, I was working in my case -- not doing anything very important, mounting my power supply back into case, reconnecting cables.

Then, I suddenly started getting problems where my system would go on, off, on, off, as if someone were pushing the power button repeatedly. Very weird. This would happen within a few seconds or a few minutes of starting the system. I replaced the power supply, and the problem dissapeared completely.

But now I simply cannot get into my operating system, Win2k. It tells me that that a file is corrupt and I should use the repair option from my Win2k CD. Win2k installation runs, but consistently hangs when it reaches a certain file. The same result is from CD or Hard disk. Now, I remember having a similar problem, and it was due to a bad stick of RAM.

I tried switching RAM slots, trying only one stick at a time (have two 256MB DDR sticks), but problem persists. I tried changing IDE cable, and IDE port, but problem persists.

Where should I go from here? All this comes as I just got Win2k reinstalled on my system (after replacing my hard disk), so this makes me very irritated and I've just about had it. So any ideas are very appreciated. Thanks.

System Specs:
AMD Tbird 1.33 Ghz
Gigabyte 7DXR mainboard
2x 256MB Crucial DDR ECC DIMM
80 Gig Maxtor 5400rpm
4X CDR
LiteOn 16X DVD
Matrox G550 Dualhead
250watt PS

This is a long shot but make sure you have a good CD rom driver running. Some POS drivers will let the CD run half way and then puke.
