Solutions for a noisy hard drive? Anyway to keep it quiet?

I have an older Maxtor HDD in my Centurion 5 case and it makes this horribly annoying sound, that's pretty hard to explain. It's pretty loud and not even the fan on my 7900GT on max can keep it quiet. Is there some solution to keeping a noisy drive quiet? Thanks in advance.

There are enclosures designed for internal drives that can help knock down the noise.

Some examples at Directron

I guess something like that is what you're looking for. I'm pretty sure you would have to remove it temporarily to get any of them in place.

Is it a new noise? noise level? In that case, as I'm sure you know, your drive may be on the verge of failure. Backup NOW.

You could also try suspending the drive if most of the problem is conduction of noise from the drive into the case. I have some cable clamps in my FS/T listing that are commonly used in suspending HDDs. Just click on the link in my sig.

.bh.

As a related method to Zepper's suspension, I have used velcro to secure a HDD - it provides sufficient stability, but also pads/damps the contact between two metal surfaces so that vibration is not sensed or resonated through metal to metal contact.

I just popped in the drive, it's an older drive from an older computer, probably around 2000-2001, idr exactly when. The noise level is very high, but more than that it's high pitched so it would drive you crazy after a few hours of exposure. Some program notified me that the drive was on the verge of failure, idr the program. Should I take that warning seriously? There's nothing on the drive that's critical so if it does give out I couldn't care less about the data.

yes you should take the warning seriously, generally when the noises from a drive change (ie it suddenly becomes louder all the time then it used to, or it starts clicking) that means failure is coming.

lol, actually I meant whether or not I should get rid of the drive because of the danger it might pose to other components. It's completely safe other than the data loss right?

actually, if it fails it could and most likely will lock up the system, and could cause data damage on the other drives because of the system locking up.

get rid of it, or put some back ups on it and put it away somewhere so it might last at least for that.
