here's what I did:
Install 3.11 alpha
Install 4.01, select no when it asks you if you want 4.01 to play 3.x content
For the problem with people having movies playing upside down in WMP8:
Go to Tools, Options. Click the Performance tab.
Click the Advanced button (bottom of window). Make sure that Use Video Mixing Renderer is not selected. Also make sure that Enable full-screen mode switch is also not selected. Click OK on everything else. Restart the media player and that should solve it.
For some movies that won't play at all, just play them in Windows Media Player 6.4 (located in C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player folder. It's called mplayer2.exe
