It's illegal for the military to do civil law enforcement work.

Even though I'm quite partial to the 2nd amendment, I can't pretend England hasn't more or less solved its gun crime. They are not the US, though. They have different demographics and culture, and although gun crime is lower they still have other issues, perhaps some the result of less guns (like home invasions).Guy has a point... up to a limit. How many people do cops in the UK shoot?
Propensity to be armed means propensity to be shot.
OTOH, it's not feasible to eliminate guns here. Yet I see a cultural revolution towards crime the day everyone is on video and knows exactly what you've been doing. If it's a widespread cultural understanding that NO crime can be gotten away with, it may dramatically reduce it AND in turn reduce the cop's need to shoot first and ask questions later.
I suspect crime is growing scarce in a connected world.
This would great, like a stun gun from star trek. Closest we have are tazers, though. Until/unless the chances of people having guns are as low as they are in England US cops need to continue to be armed. While the OP is severely misguided, I do think a real solution for cop killings would be some kind of non lethal weapon that functions identical to a gun (magazine with "bullets" that completely incapacitate a suspect). That completely removes all police killings, whether justified or not. Kid with a toy now gets knocked out, possibly sustains some minor injuries, and the cops can safely assess the situation. Idiot in Walmart with what looks like an assault rifle not paying attention to police orders? Yep, he is still alive as well. People who attack police officers in their car? Yep, still alive and in custody.
so its a cultural issue... btw imo- like it or not- its more feasible to stop firearms than to remove incentive to commit crimes. why? you don't need to. JUST STOP MAKING AND SELLING BULLETS.... ( xept for the army guys) then in time> guns become just decoration .... there is always going to be CRIME, btw it is more difficult to kill with a chair.also i find firearms so... archaic, the concept haven't even evolved much, is like we are still using arrows.

Keep guns out of the ghetto and severely mentally ill people you reduce shootings and mass shootings to almost nothing.
And your plan to accomplish that is?
Keep guns out of the ghetto and severely mentally ill people you reduce shootings and mass shootings to almost nothing.
-first bare with me on this... English is not my native language- so the solution...
ALL PEOPLE INC POLICE > NOT allowed to KILL and OR carry ANY kind of firearms.
ONLY the army@ special forces > allowed to KILL and carry ANY kind of firearms.
so want to kill? like guns? join the army. ( or become a criminal) but hey, how about my freedom to carry guns ? ( o shut up) and how do you enforce the law ? easy ..
- state-of-the-art non-lethal weapons-
I mean weapons better that regular guns , technological, advanced, more powerful, hell inflict as much pain as possible BUT WITHOUT KILLING. I see this as a law + technological problem. We cant train cops to be expert marksman, and they do like to pull the trigger.
but what happens is somebody robs a bank etc? like i said. SPECIAL FORCES. regular cops? non-lethal (ray? guns) no killing allowed sorry.
