SOLUTION: A7N8X Deluxe Networking Problem

I'm having some trouble connecting a new computer build with roadrunner cable internet service. Here are the specs on the computer (it's not a gaming rig, just a stable/cheap home office tower for a friend)

W2K Pro
A7N8X Deluxe (BIOS rev. 1002)
nForce 1.16 drivers from Asus website
Athlon XP 1800+
2 sticks 256MB Crucial PC 2700
G4 MX440 SE
Maxtor ATA-133 40GB 7200RPM
Lite-On 48x 24x 48x CD-RW
Antec SLK2600AMB w/ 300W Antec power supply
PCI 56k Modem (dial-up only in his area right now, but some broadband within the next 1-2 years)

Anyway, both the onboard 3Com and the Nforce Lan connections will not renew their IP addresses. The home network I'm using currently has a Linksys BEFSX41 router with a Toshiba PCX2200 cable modem (courtesy of RR). Both the 3Com and the nForce LANs have been configured for DHCP. (they have the same settings as the other machine on the network also running W2K Pro).

When I try to renew using ipconfig I receive a 'DHCP server unreachable' message. I have tried to renew the IP address with ipconfig under the following conditions:

1) Connected each RJ45 port to the router
2) Disconnected the cable modem from the router and connected each RJ45 port directly to the cable modem
3) Disabled each port in the BIOS and tried 1) and 2) with only one functional RJ45 port.

The same problem exists regardless of the number of functional RJ45 ports. When connected the link light for either RJ45 port is green and flickering like some kind of data transfer is happening.

The RoadRunner software setup gives the error message 'Your NIC is configured with DHCP but it cannot renew an IP address' or 'Both are configured with DHCP but neither can renew an IP address'

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...I have two days until I said I would deliver the puter.

Is your router configured to act as DHCP server?

Also when you connect the nforce and the 3com directly to the cable modem, did you reboot the cable modem? In Canada, Videotron won't let you get second IP unless you pay for it. So if you disconnect the computer and connect another one, you have to reboot the cable modem to be able to get a new IP.

Make sure cables and everything are fine (includes changing port on router to known good one). I would also reco going to the nvidia 2.03 drivers as well as those 1.6's are fairly old.

Thanks for your helpful responses. I have been meaning to post the solution to the problem below for a couple of days now. Basically the router was not releasing the IP address of the previous computer. The DHCP server is configured to give out two IP addresses. The IP address of the old computer was still in the routing table, so I simply went to the routing table and deleted the entry. That IP address became available again and I was able to renew. Thanks again for your replies.

🙂mboy -strictly FYI- this is from the ASUS download website:
'NForce2 all in one version 1.16 driver for Win2K. Due to different naming rules, this 1.16 driver, though named 1.16, is still newer than the one on NVIDIA website.'
