I'd go with the abit is7 and 2.8c, which I use. Mine overclocks to 3640 (260 fsb). No point in getting the "e" prescott in socket 478. It runs warmer and a tad slower. Soltek doesn't even have a usa website anymore. Check with newegg on warranty if you get the soltek.

I'd recommend the LGA775 processor and a mobo with the i865PE chipset. Newegg has the SOLTEK "SL-865Pro-775", and a few others from ASUS, ABIT and Gigabyte.

Why go with the LGA775? Theres a million other considerations to be made if thats the way to move. Money is an issue, sure - and I dont need a future proofed box or the latest and greatest.

What is it about the Abit IS7 that makes it a great board and so able to OC?

Thanks gents.

The 2.8C has half a meg of cache instead of the full 1MB cache on the E.

Im doing extensive photoshop work on this machine. Wont I want the extra cache?

If you're not overclocking, the 2.8E may work fine for you. The extra cache on the "e" series helps with the extra pipelines in the "e". Basically, it's compensating for the longer processing time required. Don't know if it will run faster for your photoshop work. Sorry for any confussion.

Anyone have this board yet, or for that matter any of the other 865PE boards -- Abit AS8, Asus P5P800, Gigabyte ???.

I've seen mixed results with the AS8, but little or nothing on the Soltek, Asus, or Gigabyte.

I ended up going for this board. So far, so good. My P4 520 (2.8E) is running at 3.5 GHz, temperature is around 57-60C.

Sandra burn-in reports much higher CPU temp (sometimes). Anyone know how it's reading the temperature since it differs from the Soltek HW monitor?

Havent bought yet. Wont be doing OC after all. Still considering this board but because I dont plan to OC Im struggling considering the rock solid Intel boards.
