SOLTEK SL-75DRV5 & CORSAIR CMX512-2700C2 PC2700 DDR RAM 333MHz

Hey everyone,
I am thinking about building a new system. I am still stuck with an T-Bird 800 with a Geforce 2MX. So, after a little saving, I finally have enough to get new components. Here is what i wanna get:

CPU: Athlon XP 2000+ (i think it is in the "sweet spot" on price vs performance)
MoBo: Soltek SL-75DRV5 KT333
RAM: CORSAIR MEMORY 512MB PC2700 DDR RAM 333MHz Cas 2
VGA Card: Geforce 4 Ti4600 (thinking Visiontek or Gainward Gold Sample cuz of the VIVO (video in and out))

Okay since this is a Mobo forum, help on the mobo and RAM would be great. Has anyone tried the Soltek 75DRV5 (not 4)? I am also concerned that since the new KT333 are so.. well, new, that there are problems like the old KT266.... I just dont want a KT333A coming out in 2 weeks that is significantly better. Also worthy to note, I want to try a little overclocking (not too much... just pusht the components as far as it goes).
Now the memory. I liked the Corsair b/c its the only Cas 2 i saw and the company has a good name... with a little price premium. I was also thinking about two OCZ PC3000 256MB sticks, but i heard of people having broblems running 2 of them. Any thoughts on the OCZ? Does the PC3000 make a difference over the PC2700, or only when you overclock? I am also open to any other suggestions on RAM. Again, I want to try a lil overclocking, but i do not wish to sacrifice stability over a few Mz gain. Also (maybe a stupid question) 2 sticks of 256MB or one 512MB?

Well I don't think you will have any problems with the KT333, I haven't seen any problems with the KT266A and their will be no KT333A or so they say so you don't have to worry about that, I think you would be better off with the Corsair some people don't care for the OCZ name, They changed owners a while back so I don't know I have used their memory and other parts and have had both good luck and bad luck with them but then again I had a stick of Corsair 2700 memory go bad on me to, I don't think you will see any diff. With the 3000 over the 2700 memory, I run one stick of 512 in one of my computers and two 256's in the other and they are both stable, As far as the Ti4600's newegg has some and you can find them on price watch, Good luck with your system
 
Kali157, Im assuming you did some research on the Soltek SL-75DRV5 KT333, or wouldnt have chose it.

Do you know if it supports CPU voltages higher than 1.85v?

If you dont know, got any links to reviews/previews or specs on this board?

It would be greatly appreciated, cuz as it stands now, the only KT333 mobo that I know for sure that supports cpu
voltages over 1.85v is the Epox board.

Id much rather go with the Soltek board.
Not cuz I think Epoxs are bad, my Epox 8K7A has served me VERY well & trouble free.

I just wanna build something with different parts this time around.

I dont think so. I may be wrong. But i am pretty sure it is capped at 1.85v in the bios. Anyway, I am a little uncomfortable with having more than 1.85v running through my CPU.

As of this point I am pretty set on the Mobo (though input is ALWAYS helpful). So waht about the RAM? I am a lil worried about buying RAM that isnt going to perform well. (i guess thats why I am leaning towards ONE 512 MB stick... less problems of compatibility). Any good RAM suggestions, or is it just luck? Thanks again
 
When it comes to DDR333 ram Im at a loss also, since Im still currently using PC2100 (Crucial).

But it doesnt hurt to bump the thread again hoping for an answer to that question also. 😉


BTW: My Athlon XP 1900 will only hit 1730mhz with 1.85v, Ive had it up to 1800mhz with 2.04v, but I was uncomfortable with that voltage.
Im thinking more along the lines of trying 1.9v at around 1775mhz.

But each mobo is different so Im not sure if Ill be able to OC this thing more or less than I currently am with my Epox 8K7A.
But at least I'll be moving to a faster chipset.

holy crap I get it now... why people sometimes post "bump".... HAHAHAHAHAHAHA... i thought it was some forums lingo i just didnt get.

alright... now about the board... i have been looking around (instead of studying for finals) and it seems like performance and compatibility issues are almost by luck.... GREAAAAAAAAAAAT.... just great..... i hate not having a set thing... its either it works or it doesnt dammit... oh well, I think I am gonna go with the Soltek/Corsair combo and pray for the best.

I am gonna order this next week, so till then, does anyone have inputs?

Oh and Montego, hows the Visiontek Ti4600??? I heard that the software it came with (like the dvd player) isnt the full version or something.... damn i cant remember where i read that, but it stuck to my mind. Anyway, is that true??? Whats included with your toy.. er.. video card... thanks again
 
I havent tried the dvd software yet cuz I have 3 pcs in my house & this is my gaming rig & I dont have a dvd drive in it, just a CDRW.

I'll install the bundled Power DVD software & let you know then. (I already own a copy of Power DVD so I never bothered)

Other than that, it came with a driver cd with some tech demos you can also download from Nvidia's site.

The drivers included are 27.51s & 27.42s (I guess they figured theyd let users decide whats best)

Im not using either, Im using 27.70s which seem to work best for me under WinXp.

Other than that there was just a note stating that the VIVO connector was not ready in time to ship with the cards, so rather than ship the cards late
they just shipped them without the connector.
And it gives you a web address to got & register to get the vivo connector sent to you along with a free Xtasy Tshirt.

By "not full version" , what should I be looking for?
Lack of features?
i just installed it & it seems to have all features enabled.
it doesnt say anything about expiring in 30 days or anything.

But I am no expert since I dont use it much with a PS2, Xbox & standalone dvd player in my home.
So I wouldnt exactly take my word for it, that all features of the full version are present, but it does seem to have all the features that my other copy of
Power DVD have.

If you find out what I should look for, Id be glad to check for you.

If youre looking for "some" inputs on other DDR333 mobos, theres several others trying to make a decision also on this forum.
At the very least youll get some links to reviews.

Other than having to deal with dip switches, I havent heard anything negative about the Soltek board though.
(but of course none of the KT333 mobos have been out long enough for alot of user feedback)


 
Kali157, ok, I figured out what you read about the bundled version of Power DVD.

Its the BASIC version.

Heres a rundown.

OKay found the site that i was thinking of.... http://www.3dgpu.com/reviews/xtasy4600_2.php.... under "bundled software" it says the Power DVD isnt the full version... but doesnt explain how or why... gee that helps...

anyway, the main point is how u like it? what r u runnign anyway? any general probs... like heat? how far can u overclock it too w/out stability loss?

i was thinking of getting the Gainward lil brother... Ti4400... same core slightly lower memory... gotto overclock to get near the Ti4600 tho... so i am a lil hesitant.

glad i am starting to narrow down a bit... i think... i hope... we'll see in a week what i order... and by the following week, hopefully i can come back with no probs or alteast reviews since noone seems to have the Soltek Mobo...

while i have your attention, any difference btwn Maxtor ATA133 and IBM ATA100? no RAID config.... just a straight up drive. I heard 2 sides to this story too... sites review see a slight difference, forum people dont... just curious.

Best Ive done so far is 310/core 735/memory, but I havent pushed my card that much since its so new.

I cant set my core over 310 or it locks up, although that may be the drivers Im using.
(kinda weird theres no "official" GF4 drivers yet)

Im using NVMAX BTW.

No heat issues at all.
I was kinda worried when I unpacked it & there were no heatsinks on the ram.

Turns out it doesnt need them, my case temp didnt rise at all & card runs surprisingly cool.

Note that I have 2intake fans on side of my case over the cpu & video card, 2 exhaust fans 1 behind cpu & one
out the top of my case, 2 exhaust fans on my power supply & one intake fan at the bottom front of my case.

So thats 4 exhaust fans & 3 intake fans.

So results may be different in a case with different airflow.

But Im confident in saying, theres no heat issues with the card at all.
 
Kali157, you may wanna check into possible compatabilty issues with the Soltek board & the Visiontek GF4 card.

Im sure youve heard about the incompatabilty with the GF4 & the Epox 8KHA board where the capacitors hit when the videocard
is inserted into the agp slot.

I was viewing the review you posted of the Soltek board when I came across a pick that shows a capacitor that looks like it "may"
be to close for comfort to the agp slot to allow a Visiontek GF4 card.

Since I have a Vistiontek GF4, this does worry me a little.
I'll see if I can find someone with this vid card & mobo combo to see if theres any problems.
But both pieces of hardware are so new, that may be hard to do.
 
i am 99% sure its low enough or not even in the way.... where did i pull that? i kinda remember hearing somewhere that people have tried it and dang it i cant remember the site.... I know the Soltek 75DRV4 had problems with the Geforece 4 b/c the floppy drive connector was right there.... but for the 75DRV5 if you look at the pics in newegg (the one in an angle with the RAM slots closest) you can see that the capacitor is aprox the same height as the AGP slot. problem arises when the capacitor is higher than the AGP slot since the lowest capacitor on a G4 is a few mm above the AGP slot level. You can compare the size of the capacitors in that area with pics from Newegg of the Epox board. The capacitor is definitely bigger and taller.

Should we still be nervous... since i dont have both these components with me to test... sure why not... but thats what it is all about right... having parts that MIGHT work and getting them to work. If they all worked the same why and you can predict that would be tooo boring... okay was was being sarcastic but in the end i kinda saw my own point... its early for me... i need to stop studying

as for cooling... i got 2 enermax 80m ... one exhaust over my CPU and another in the front as inflow. Then i cut a hole the diameter of aproximately 12" on the side of my case covering CPU and Video card (well 12" covers quite a bit) and bolted a Honeywell Tornado fan... yup, a room fan. It has many advantages... one it pushes TONS of air... the fan is rated to cool a small room... its quiet... well its alot more quiet than a delta or even lower fans and the lowest setting... finally it doesnt suck power from my powersupply... plugs straight into the wall... actually when I have this on, i turn off the other 2 fans cuz they really dont help when the Honeywell is on. so this thing turns on when temps get too hot and remains off on noraml apps (like now).
