Soltek K8Tpro 3rd IDE connector

This board has a 3rd IDE connector on it that runs off a Promise PDC20579 controller, and I want to use a 300GB drive to store video files I record off HDTV. I don't want to use it in RAID which is what the manual says the controller is for, I just want to use it as another IDE channel. Can I just plug the drive in or do I need to load special drivers?

Once activated, you will have to install drivers for it. You may need to initialize the drive as a single drive RAID, but not a big deal. And maybe you wont ..

It is a new drive, so do I need to format it before I install it, or will windows recognize it and format it?

No, once installed, you can do it within Windows. In administrative tools/computer management/disk management.
