This year's winter solstice — an event that will occur next Tuesday — will coincide with a full lunar eclipse in a union that hasn't been seen in 456 years.

OTTAWA — This year's winter solstice — an event that will occur next Tuesday — will coincide with a full lunar eclipse in a union that hasn't been seen in 456 years.
The celestial eccentricity holds special significance for spiritualities that tap into the energy of the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year and a time that is associated with the rebirth of the sun.
"It's a ritual of transformation from darkness into light," says Nicole Cooper, a high priestess at Toronto's Wiccan Church of Canada. "It's the idea that when things seem really bleak, (it) is often our biggest opportunity for personal transformation.
"The idea that the sun and the moon are almost at their darkest at this point in time really only further goes to hammer that home."

I find it funny that about half of the article is about Wiccans, but there's not much scientific content in the article.

Wow, this is PERFECT for us on the west coast. Full eclipse at just after midnight.

And to top it off, I'm far from any major cities visiting the in-laws for the holidays. Hopefully the skies are clear.

Sometimes these things aren't very helpful...

is it happening early Tuesday morning? Or early Wednesday morning / late Tuesday night?

I'll be waking up early for work on Wednesday and would see it clearly then, but I'll sleep through it Tuesday morning.

According to the article posted in the repost thread, "The eclipse will happen Monday night on the West Coast and during the wee hours Tuesday on the East Coast."

I guess it's one of those "bimonthly" things - twice a month, or every two months. Take your pick. :)

Hm, sucks.

I'll probably stay up to see it. (On vacation this week.)

(Incidentally, I took the opportunity to read a bit on European vacation laws, vs those in the US. Minimum legal requirements over there are somewhere around 20 days a year, plus holidays. Crazy. You'd need to work for something like 25 years to get that much vacation time in the US. :()

It's EST in my section of the globe.

And the following day I have to wake up at 3:30am. I'm not staying up late to watch this. :(

BriIIIiiight eyes

One of my favorite Blind Guardian songs!

Fool just another
Fool just another

I've been waiting
For signs of god
Create - enslave - behaved -
Everything is out of control

Leave me alone
Isolation bears hope
There's something else waiting
A promised destiny
Freezing me
I feel restless and low
These days full of sadness
Had joyfully changed
Into fear
My freakshow will start tonight
Don't miss the right time

Bright eyes
Blinded by fear of life
No Merlin is by my side

Everything is out of control
Everything is out of control
In my future plans
Everything is out of control
No one's left to hurt
Everything is out of control
Sorrow's gone away

Broken memories
Walking upstairs
Step by step
I see the whole world burning
The poet dies in Newerland
How it burns

Hey, mother stubborn
I really hate you
If you say yes I will say no
Ashes to ashes
But dust won't be dust
If you go there
I will go back

Bright eyes
Blinded by fear of life
Betrayed by sunrise
Bright eyes
Blinded by fear of life
No Merlin is by my side

Hey, father stubborn
You're ying
And I'm yang
I feel alone
Who really cares
Born into ashes
To lose all the games
With a smiling face

Bright eyes
Blinded by fear of life
And dark dragons rise
Bright eyes
Blinded by fear of life
No Merlin is by my side

So I sit still in my room, today
Winter's here
In summer season
Shall I say
I was wrong
If I'm right
Farewell to my last hope

In that case, just get up a few hours early, and you could probably see it. :p

Get up early, on a day off? Ugh. That would mean going to bed early for no reason at all, and, of course... waking up early on a day for no reason.
The moon is neat and all, and not seeing it while seeing it is an interesting phenomenon, but.... shit, my bed is comfortable. Especially considering mornings are awful.
;)

I might wake up to look at it for a few minutes, and then go back to sleep. We'll see. I know me pretty well, and I highly expect to sleep right through it.

Weird, that's what I thought of when I saw his post too, but I didn't think he meant the song.. lol.
