Solid Thermal Grease?

My friend borrowed a 1.3 GHZ Amd Athlon off me (Pre XP+) and i got it back to put in a rig im building today, the thermal grease round the core is solid, has this thing been run hot or something???
 
That can happen to some older Thermal Compounds under long term use that's why AMD only officially supports thermal pads and one brand (Eschew or something) of Thermal Goo. It should come off with some rubbing alcohol or similar....read the Thermal Compound manuf's site.
