I have a problem I thought the Anand crowd may be able to answer. I run IT for a medium sized company with two satellite offices. We have been doing site to site VPN for both locations and have managed to keep a small server in both offices. However, one of my remote sites had been using a hosting company upstairs to maintain their server.
Now here is the issue, we will no longer be using this hosting company and will instead have their equipment placed in a closet in our satellite office. This closet is not environmentally controlled, so I am hesitant about placing anything there that is not solid state. Currently we will place our Cisco 3000 concentrator and a procurve switch into this closet.
Because most of the office functionality will be tunneled through our central location, I don't need to worry about hosting SQL, exchange or any other heavy hitters. I would however like some type of local storage to allow for efficient deployment of software packages and updates.
So what are my options? I have looked at solid state Nas solutions but am unable to find alot of offerings. What about slower hard drives? I feel these may still produce too much heat. I also want to be sure that the NAS controller does not produce an exorbitant amount of heat itself.
Thank you in advance for any opinions or advice.
