Solid State Disk for the mass?

Not sure if this is old.

I read on Gigabyte's iRAM and it looks very promising, but a little search brought up Samsung's pitch on the SSD market: non-volatile Solid State Disk based on NAND flash technology.

Not sure how it would compare to Gigabyte's iRAM in term of performance but it sure looks more convenient by being non-volatile and designed to look like a regular hdd. Samsung announced 16GB 2.5' device for mobile applications, which is twice bigger than what you get with the iRAM. Price might be the decisive factor.

Your thoughts?

Yea, biggest hit would be price, and the nand sshd is targeted towards laptops/portables where as the idisk by gigabyte is targeted towards pcs. Think i read in anand's blog that he has looked at the idisk and will have a review on it early in the week.

if you look at the specs 52MB/s read and 37MB/s write, they are not impressive at all. a raptor easily beats it, as do most(if not all)current 7200rpm hard drives

AT main page has a review up on the i-ram. It's faster than a Raptor, but not that much IMO. Seems like silence is it's biggest advantage.

I just read the review on the iRAM by Anandtech. It seems worthy enough to buy one for myself to try out.

Anyone know where I can get one without spending an arm and a leg? 🙂
